It feels like I've been asleep forever and the date for today is definitely not the same as it was when I laid down. What happened? Did one of those curses I keep hearing about last for a week or what?

And this would be a Mercy tearing towards his room. "JACK?!?"

Jack looked up and set the device aside.

"Mercy! So you're home. What's been going on, has it really been a week?"

She leaned against the doorway, catching her breath after her mad dash. "Something like that, yeah. You scared me half to death. Is this something you do regularly?"

Jack had the decency to look apologetic.

"Sorry, didn't mean to frighten you. I wasn't expecting it myself. In fact, I rarely ever sleep at all. Sleep well anyway."

"It's okay. I just... worried, you know?" She smiled at him. "And I did get to meet the Doctor, so that was a positive."

"Ah, well, you know me, Mercy, can't keep me down for long!" Jack grinned. "The Doctor, huh? He came by? What'd you think of him?"

Mercy couldn't help the smile. "We got along really well. He's quite the character."

"He is isn't he? Part of the reason I stayed with him as long as I did. Just don't let his charm get to you, he's a heart-breaker that one."

"Don't worry. I'm not looking to get involved with anyone..." Mercy gave him a half smile. "Always turns out badly."

He knows that feeling. He smiles sympathetically.
"The coyote thing puts people off I guess. That's a stupid reason not to date someone." Really, people and their prejudices.

Mercy laughed. "No, not that. Or at least not in that way. Back home I couldn't tell anybody what I was, so for them it was a non-issue. For me it was always having to hide the biggest part of me and how can you have a truly close relationship with someone when you have to lie about, well... almost everything important."

And grew more somber. "Here, well... it wasn't the coyote thing. Just me being a failure at it all. And it hurts too damn much to keep going through that."

...I can understand that. There's no point in lying about something as big as that.

And I know what you mean about the second one. Don't give up on it forever, Mercy, you'll find someone.

She shrugged. "Maybe. But I'm not holding my breath. I mess things up."

She laughed. "And you've known me for how long? But don't worry, I'm not closing the door entirely, okay?"

He laughed as well. "Call it intuition, but I'll accept that answer."
