Black Comedy

There’s an upsetting lack of good television shows on at the moment. Since Dollhouse was cancelled there’s seriously nothing I’m interested in watching week to week. Well…maybe House, but even then I’ve sort of lost interest over the last season.

So I’m taking the opportunity to watch some old shows I have been meaning to see. I need something to do when I’m procrastinating about finishing my uni assignments. There’s only so much fanfiction out there to read.

Firstly, Six Feet Under; I’ve always been a fan of black comedies. I think it’s probably not technically a comedy but some moments are just too painfully true to not be. I love the title sequence, especially the opening few seconds. The music just seems to perfectly capture the utter fleetingness of life. The mother is so painfully uptight that’s she’s hilarious, as is the deeply closeted David. It’s so amazing seeing Michael C. Hall play someone other than Dexter, although I must admit it took me a couple of episodes to stop seeing him as a serial killer. I love the quote he gave an interviewer about taking this role after appearing on Broadway: “Everything I opened up for Cabaret I slammed shut for David." Also Australian Rachael Griffiths seems just the right amount of crazy. It’s really nice to see a couple represented on TV that have disagreements but don’t have the ridiculous teenage angst. They work things out. It’s refreshing.

Secondly, Pushing Daisies; another black comedy. It’s also ridiculously retro. I wish I had as many pretty dresses as Chuck (although I am getting there). So far I’ve only seen the first season but the second season came out on DVD in Australia this week and it’s only $30! Still, I’m supposed to be saving for prac. It’s distressing. Apart from the costuming (Ned does look quite dashing in his vests and ties) and saturated backgrounds I also enjoy the layers upon layers of silly metaphors they use. The narration is also amazing, it reminds me of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy (or at least the voice I imagine narrating the books).

Finally there’s my Veronica Mars re-watch. Tried to get my 13 year old sister into it. Her only comment was ‘It’s weird. Why is she a detective? I thought she wasn’t allowed.’ I don’t think she’s ever watched something that wasn’t a reality show. *face palm* I don’t know how we’re related. Not much happening on the Veronica Mars front, just waiting for this fanfic to get updated. I doubt it ever will.
