1) Billy Novik (Anton Yelchin). Born in a life of privilege that he always hated Billy felt there must be something more too life. He spent his life watching the world fall apart from behind the walls of his parents mansion as they refused to admit what was plain to see; the earth was dying. He was always expected to follow in his fathers footsteps and taking over the family business when the time came but he saw no merit in this path. The more his family pushed him to conform, the further he pulled away. After the death of his father, Billy could no longer force himself to accept his mother’s life of denial and fled in search of something better. He found himself living rough in a refugee camp, one man among hundreds, filled with the desire to make a difference. Due to his privileged upbringing, Billy has little idea how to live in the real world. He desperately wants to help people and becomes increasingly frustrated when he is completely unequipped to.

2) Sara (Maki Horikita). Raised by The Church she was sent into camps as a child to spy on families and report back any people who were spreading ‘lies’. She became accustomed to this life as it was all she had ever known, picking up the skills to survive, avoid detection, and many nasty habits to deal with the stress. She had no problem with this life and never considered another until she met Daly. She was assigned to train him after his indoctrination into The Church. Slowly he convinced her they could find a better life together, if they were to run away. They had another companion, a small child whom they treated as a daughter despite being mere teenagers themselves. She was very young, and sickly and she did well to survive as long as she did. Sara felt she was to blame and, believing Daly thought so too, she left. She proceeded to spend her days fighting and drinking and living alone, always travelling, never staying in one place too long, never letting anyone get too close. She travelled alone until meeting Billy who attempts to ‘save’ her from a fight she would have won food from. She finds herself unable to leave him. She refuses to admit this is because she was lonely and instead insists it’s because he’d never last a day without her. She has no interest in joining the Resistance but her loneliness means she’s unlikely to ever leave.

3) Daly (Jake Smollett). From a family of resistance fighters he watched his parents and the rest of his family executed by The Church. He was spared because one of the executioners took pity on him. He spent his early teen years assigned to work with Sara in the camps. He pretended to go along with it while he planned his escape. He ran away from The Church with Sara, removing their tracking chips and laying low, living off the land until Sara left him. He has no memory of why this was. Daly is fiercely loyal to people he considers his 'family'. He likes to be seen as the one 'taking care' of people. He acts as though he has encountered any situation a million times before and knows exactly what to do although he rarely does. Daly is also very religious, believing in God and destiny. He’s slightly insane, laughing and occasionally talking to himself for no apparent reason. He appoints himself as leader and is usually very good at it. Sometimes however, he takes them in a direction for reasons known only to himself, fighting years of repressed memories. Billy, having seen his own mother go through the same thing, is the only person who recognises this and begins to help.
