supernatural 5x17

HI PEOPLE. I just realized my last update was months ago. But I'm slowly getting back in here. Going to spiff up my layout and profile page in a bit, but before that, just a few thoughts + picspam about this week's Supernatural.

Supernatural 5x17 - 99 Problems

1. "I don't understand, why, why do you want me to say my name." Cas, never change. "I found a liquor store. And I drank it." Except, do get drunk more.

2. Dean's getting a lot of backlash here, isn't he? My poor baby.

a. Visiting a woman we haven't seen in 2 seasons and don't know much about, and telling her he wants a life with her and making 'arrangements' to protect her and her son. Before we go batshit crazy on Lisa-hate, it's quite clear Dean doesn't really love her, not the epic love of Desmond/Penny or Chuck/Sarah (guess which other two shows I've been obsessing about). He never mentions the word 'love' (unless he whispered it to her when he leaned in to kiss her, there was a moment there I thought he did, but never mind that).

We know Dean. White picket fences are Sam's stuff, but Dean always secretly wanted it. He knows he could never have it, a normal life, but a tiny part of him still hopes. This last scene isn't random, not at all. This is him wanting a normal life. He loves the idea of Lisa and Ben, a family that could easily be his, yet could never be his. In that last scene, by confessing to that, he gives up that hope. Completely. Giving himself up to Michael is very likely a road of no return. Much like clearing up one's affairs before certain death, he wraps up his hopes and desires in sentences and tells them to Lisa. And then never looks back.

b. "I have to." That's what Dean said to Lisa when she told him not to do whatever it is. And of course he has to go and do it right after Sam tells him that he needs him. How else can this show tear your heart out? While one might disagree with his decision, you must understand it. Here they are, helpless in the face of The End. And dubious as the Angels' motives could be, they could help.

Dean's been on this path for a while now, you can say all the way back from when he was brought back from hell. It's hard to completely understand any character, much less one like Dean Winchester. He's quite literally been to hell and back, and the things he saw there, it would have long broken a weaker man. But right now, Dean Winchester is broken. That desperate plea to God in My Bloody Valentine (5x14) was absolutely heartbreaking. He's tired, he can't do much more, and he just wants some divine intervention.

One thing that might be terribly obvious but which I can't reconcile, Dean is certified to be a true servant of God, yes. Does that mean a part of him still holds faith in God, or that it's his destiny, faithful or otherwise?
