artist notes: this is for the undeadbigbang, for norgbelulah's awesome story! you should read it because it's a great, character-driven story and it's told through the POV of Loretta McCready, who is pitch-perfect. i absolutely love the relationship between Loretta and Raylan, which remains completely true to canon in this AU.
the story is awesomely character-driven, and i wanted to do art that somehow conveyed the relationship between the various characters and their geography, which is something that struck me as particularly significant as i read the story, and therefore it's the "background" of the art. i also picked up an emphasis on "memories" and tried to do something with that idea, hence the "snapshots" theme.
the title is from johnny cash's when the man comes around, and the tree is the main focal point because of the idea of branches and roots -- and the tree branches are bare because, obvs, death and zombies -- but with the promise of new growth, too, as the story ends on a hopeful note.
like i said, i overthink things all the time but this is what you do when you have an art history degree you never use ;)
