This weekend I have watched: Monster House, The Village, November, World Trade Center, The Hills Have Eyes, and Wolf Creek.
Monster House was at the choice of my nieces, but it was still a cute film.
The Village is still one of my favorite films, even though everyone I have ever shown it to didn't like it.
I got November at the video store because it starred Courtney Cox and billed itself as a psychological thriller. Let me give you a piece of advice, when you see something on the shelf that stars a major actor or actress and you've never heard of the film before, there is probably a good reason why. I'm guessing this was some script that once had promise, but something went wrong in the editing of the film. Whenever you make something that no one can understand that doesn't make it clever, it just makes it incoherent garbage. This is the perfect reason why people should not try to overthink their films with plot twists. Leave that to people that can actually pull it off.
I thought World Trade Center was a decent movie, but I guess I expected more. I thought it would be some kind of a comprehensive story, but instead it is focused around the lives of two Port Authority officers that were pulled from the rubble after the Towers collapsed. While the story is compelling, I think United 93 is easily the top "9/11" based film simply because of how much emotion is captured in that movie. Get a copy of both on DVD to show your kids one day because the history books will never do a good enough job of reflecting the events that unfolded.
My copy of Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls for GBA that I had purchased off EBay last week came in on Saturday. I'm getting a head start on my New Year's Resolution, at least from a gaming perspective. I want to play through all the Final Fantasy games, even the little spinoff ones like Dirge, Tactics, and Crystal Chronicles. In the meantime, I'm working on Children of Mana for DS. A game that I should have just listened to all of the reviews about it. I figured the reason it was so heavily blasted in reviews was because it was a hack-and-slash RPG. However, it's the other points that are harped on that make it kind of blah. It is repetition times two. Seriously, the energetic rush of "this isn't so bad" that you think when your characters are level five quickly fades to "God this is boring" by the time they are level ten. I still think it's an okay game, it is just impossible to play it more than 30 minutes to an hour at a time without getting drowsy from boredom.
The screening reviews for Black Christmas are already starting to come in and it doesn't look good. Dimension is rumored to have been making edits as late as a week ago. The UK and US versions already have noticable differences in the ending. Either way, I plan to go watch the film, but it's sad to think about what could have been for this remake had it gone to Lionsgate instead of Dimension. American Horror isn't completely dead, but it is on CPR.
For some reason, the other day I got in a mood to listen to some old Sixpence None the Richer songs. I had heard they had some problems with their label which caused the delay of their second CD, then when it finally came out did not get a lot of a push. I knew the band split sometime after that. What I didn't know is that Leigh Nash (the ex-lead singer) had released her own solo album back during the summer. She sounds pretty much the same and in my opinion, is still as cute as ever. Seriously, like way cuter than Meg Ryan and that's saying a lot because most people associate the word cute with Meg Ryan. I do realize that it is odd to follow a comment about an upcoming horror film with a tidbit about an artist with soft female vocals, but sue me. Not all horror movie addicts have to listen to bands that scream and wear Halloween style makeup.
I'm slowly working on writing a screenplay, go ahead and laugh. I picked up a book at Books a Million on Friday before work that I've enjoyed reading so far. The title is, "What Would Your Character Do?". I'll let you guess on what it tries to help you improve upon. This may be one of those things that I finish and tuck away somewhere on my PC, or I may share it when complete. Who knows? It's not like I am known for finishing a lot of projects.
I still have a lot of Christmas shopping to do this weekend due to how my pay periods fell this year. :(
