Oh... Aha, I have the same issue with some of my pokemon concerning battling. It's rather difficult but I think they need to understand that all they need to do is learn how to defend themselves!

... though that is a bit hard to communicate.

Just some mock battles! They work just as well as the real thing, except more controlled. At least, that's how I'm coming to understand the process.
