Random influxes of strangers in April and July... we should expect that again in early October, I believe.  The weekend of curses also appears to change its timing along with the season.  Can we expect the third weekend to be cursed during the autumn months?  Perhaps a tangible pattern would be asking too much of the deities.

I've had a fair amount ( Read more... )

unstable chemicals, speculations, a renaissance man, new-fangled machinery, superfluous again, angst is counterproductive, city, old, blinded me with science, not always the cheery sidekick, mildly misplaced

Many things in this city aren't supposed to exist. According to most of the world I live in, I shouldn't exist, either. Magic, multiple universes, all of this is alien to me.

As for the sidhe...I know nothing about it, either, but Lockon and I are trying to mass resources to deal with it.

Ah, the atomic bomb. I remember when that was invented. I'm behind the times myself, though not a hundred years so. But why are you making weapons here?

Shouldn't you? It's remarkable, really, what exists beyond the expected and accepted reality. I don't know about your situation, but I was a member of a religious order (an order than was so secretive, in fact, that the Vatican was unable to acknowledge its existence or the existence of its members) that dealt specifically with beings that shouldn't have existed. We didn't bother with magic, though, and the idea of multiple universes--well! Far beyond even our scope.

I do wish I could help, but what information I've found is utterly useless. Myth, folklore... all of about as much use as fairy tales.

When are you from, if I may ask?

Ah, weapons... yes. Force of habit, I suppose. I was a weapons designer at home--among other occupations--and twenty years of an activity makes it second nature.

I left about 1960. And yourself?

Hmm, I doubt the Vatican would have approved of me; is communicating with the dead not some sort of forbidden act, to them? Then again, compared to vampires, magic, and cruel deities, I'm not sure I would be the one to worry about!

Fairy tales, oddly enough, may be useful here in the City. So many things I thought were myth are reality in this place. Come along with us anyway; if you are willing to confront a dangerous creature, you can likely help as much as the rest of us. None of us understand the situation completely, or even very much.

I have never preferred violence, nor am I a scientist, but there is a place for everything in this flawed world. Nonetheless, you don't seem malevolent in your work -- what is your name?

There was quite a lot going on then, wasn't there? Ah... 1889, for me ( ... )

It seems like even the highest orders have their hidden sides, eh? What purpose my skills serve, I suppose depends on who is observing them. I believe they have a good purpose -- preventing senseless death and bringing peace to those who require it.

That's all right. Hopefully there will be as little fighting as possible.

I am loathe to kill another. Is there a way to ward off the vampires, as opposed to destroying them? If anyone would know, perhaps a weapons crafter would. As for innovation...at the very least, you understand that weapons are to be used when necessary, not at every whim. There are some I know that do not understand this.

Ah, I'm far from bored! The pleasure is mine; I am The Sorrow, and it is good to meet you.

Or perhaps the higher the organization, the more there is to hide. While the Vatican's aims can be morally ambiguous, you certainly don't sound as if you're doing anything that might be considered unscrupulous. Preventing senseless death--there's nothing wrong with that ( ... )

It appears that it is a fundamental part of her -- so while I can evict foreign spirits from a person or banish a ghost from the mortal realm, I can't -- well, I'm not sure, but I won't -- separate a soul from its rightful body. Instead, I will try to suppress the Sidhe, and the others and I will cajole Eden's other side back into the dominant position.

Hmm. Perhaps, then, I'll simply take one or two of the traditional deterrents along, and hope they work.

My specialty is knowledge, both in wartime and peacetime. I have a weakness for information, you might say, and intelligent conversation. It is something my talents have given to me.

You may say either. There are times when "the" tends to get in the way -- I have been called both. Technically, though, my name includes it.

You can perform exorcisms, then? That's a convenient skill to have! I'll readily admit that my single attempt at an exorcism didn't go to plan, precisely; hopefully you might be able to put this talent to use. Possession happens every now and then here.

That's rather unique--a human and a supernatural creature intimately connected in that way. If you would like, I can compile a list of the folkloric wards against the Sidhe; the creature may be easier to suppress if exposed to objects that weaken it's power, making contact with the girl a less grueling process. Of course, that may not work. It may well be worth a try.

I have a number of crosses and the like. Should you find yourself in need of a ward, I'd be more than happy to provide you with one.

Knowledge is, perhaps, the single most important thing to possess. That'a admirable, truly, although I've been known to hold entire conversations without saying a single intelligent thing.
