The human world doesn't advance without interruption. You have to take setbacks into account.

Interruptions and setbacks should only encourage further inventiveness! Human minds are never so ingenious as when death and destruction are lurking around the corner.

They also have a tendency to shut down under those circumstances, or to turn their ingenuity towards the simplest matters of survival, like remembering how to make fire without matches.
