seriously, what is it about detectives?

1. I am currently doing a dance for joy because my favorite movie ever ever ever-- Otto Preminger's 1944 film noir masterpiece Laura is up on YouTube (and of course I also own it, but my DVD is all the way downstairs)-- and I am typing this whilst listening to Clifton Webb be interviewed by a police detective while sitting in his bathtub. Seriously, this movie makes me want to write endless papers on the portrayal of class, masculinity, and sexuality through the character of Waldo Lydecker, because is just so fascinating.

2. If you have not ever watched the film, here:

Go watch. Gene Tierney is lovely, Dana Andrews is totally hot in a competent detective sort of way, Vincent Price is strangely Southern and not Vincent Price-y, Clifton Webb is sharp-edged and confusing, and Judith Anderson wears incredible pencil skirts that I covet. Plus, the cinematography rocks, the music is epic, and the whole thing feels extravagant and dramatic in the best possible ways.

3. You know how some people have music they listen to when they're writing? I have specific movies I watch when I'm writing something in particular. For the Inception story I'm working on right now, it's all film noir, all the time. I watched The Maltese Falcon last night, Laura tonight, and I have a feeling I might break out Notorious tomorrow, if time permits.
