“Oh,” Evan hears in David’s astonished voice, and a second later he steps out of the dense forest into a picture out of a travel magazine - lush meadow, clear river nearby, mountains in the distance, the whole nine yards. He gives an appreciative whistle.
“It’s pretty,” he says aloud, checking out their surroundings.
“It’s beautiful,” David agrees, still in that wondering tone of voice. He takes a few steps into the meadow before turning back to face Evan, a delighted smile on his face. “Would it be a misappropriation of resources to use the digital camera to take pictures of this?”
Evan can only smile back. “I think it would be a crime to not do just that.”
David pulls out the camera and fiddles with it for a little while, taking pictures of the scenery and making Evan pose for a few as well. Evan retaliates by stealing the camera for David and doing the same, until they’ve got more pictures of their surroundings and each other than they do the plants they’re technically here to find.
“This could be a vacation spot,” David says some time later, when they’re sitting in the field beside each other, hands laced together. He raises his free hand and gestures broadly to their left. “A nice cabin, water from the river…”
“Wood-burning stove,” Evan agrees, envisioning it in his mind. “A nice, low bed, lots of warm blankets-”
David laughs. “Of course you’d think about the bed.”
“It’s important,” Evan mock-pouts before breaking into a grin. David laughs again before leaning in to brush their lips together.
It’s a simple kiss, sweet, full of affection and warmth, and it stuns Evan for a moment, the beauty of it. Then he’s cupping his hand around David’s neck, drawing him in, pressing his own brief kiss to David’s lips, his jaw, his cheek, his eyelids. When he pulls back, David’s eyes are still closed, and he’s got a smile on his face.
“Great vacation spot,” he says after a minute. “And you can have your big bed.”
Evan laughs as he stands, leaning back to haul David to his feet.
A few months later, David returns to their quarters to find a large, thin rectangular package on the bed. He takes the wrapping off curiously, gasping when he sees the painting. It’s the meadow, just as he remembers it from that day, light falling through the trees, the river winding peacefully through the valley below before the mountains rise in the distance. And there, off to the left, is a cabin, smoke curling up from the chimney, looking warm and inviting.
Warm arms wrap around his waist as he traces the cabin with his finger. “I think I’m calling it ‘Vacation Spot,’” Evan murmurs into his ear. “What do you think?”
“I think it’s beautiful,” David tells him, covering Evan’s clasped hands with his own.
