Ellen knows something about love and loss, about hate and fear. But there's also forgiveness and it's colored her life in a warm and yielding hue that's served her well. She wonders sometimes if maybe it was just an inevitable settling, or because of the children that brought them together as two surrogate parents to a frayed and broken lot of youngsters. Whatever the catalyst may be, Ellen curls herself into the side of the old, scarred body next to her in one long sinuous motion. The arm that settles over her side is like a shield and an affirmation.
