"Dad?!" Myka takes a step forward, and then a half step back. No way of knowing if uniting the pen and book has changed her father's symptoms, made him dangerous to people other than himself.
Warren arches and suddenly... there's ink pouring out of his eyes like smoke, more and more, every word that etched into his skin is unwriting itself and the ink returns to the pen where it belongs.
When the last drop is sucked in, the pen and book go still and Warren opens his eyes and huffs a little.
Myka kneels, wondering what he remembers, how he might've been changed by the Artifact. "Hi."
"What's all this?" Warren glances around at the group. "Did I doze off?"
How do you explain to your father that he was possessed by a notebook and pen? "Um... Sort of..."
"I was dreaming. You were reading..." He looks around and his gaze lights on the battered manuscript on the end table. Myka half-smiles hopefully, encouragingly. Warren looks up at his wife. "You didn't burn it."
"No." Her voice says that she couldn't have.
Just for a moment, everything is right in Myka's world.
