Tenure takes about 5 years to lock down. That means, he had smooth sailing in the eyes of the advisors for at least five years, and felt that he was an asset to the school.
Sometimes it's hard to see why these teachers are still allowed to be teachers, however in your case, I think there should have been a little more open-mindedness on both parties. He shouldn't make you feel awkward for your beliefs, as you should leave your beliefs at the door of the classroom- ESPECIALLY in an art class. There is so much contradiction between the church and art- It's actually a very large part of Art History, and in order for anyone to get through that class, there has to be an understanding that not all of the world agrees with what you agree.
At my Catholic high school, I saw contradiction in the art classes myself. Our Art History class was completely separate from the Church, we saw paintings and sculptures of nudes, studied polygamist religions, and focused highly on the downfall of Catholicism. Our teacher was even agnostic, but when it came to our own doing, the nude figure was never studied in drawing classes, and pieces reflecting nudity, abortion, sex or anything of the like were taken down as soon as they were hung.
I think it's pretty rediculous that he made you appologize for saying god bless you to someone for sneezing but he had a point- Art History has helped us understand the history of religious opression, and the impact religion has had on cultures, both good and bad. But he could have asked you to say "gazunthite" instead...
I could really go on about this but I'll spare you.
"right now, listening to the beautiful climax of 'let down' i can't help but think of what purpose there is in this life, what beauty can be created or taken away, and to waste - to be lazy or apathetic...well, it certainly would be a shame to run out of time."
it wasn't me who had the god bless you incident, someone else i heard about from dana after i dropped the class.
i see what you're saying. i guess if i went into detail about the exact stuff he was saying you might see how i was upset. all i'm saying is that i've taken other art classes, with different teachers, and none of them have felt the need to incorporate heavy philosophy or profanity in there teachings. or any other teacher i've ever had for that matter...
