These past two weeks I have been watching Avatar: The Last Airbender on YouTube, where some helpful soul, may they be blessed, has the whole first and second season. They're commercial free, and tiny on my screen so that I can watch them while doing other things and--wow. I am totally enthralled with this show. Do I have a favorite character or a 'ship? Not so much. Am I claiming that it's the most brilliant thing to hit the streets since Bleach? No. But. I love it.
The characterization is spot-on--the kids actually act like kids, get into stupid fights and throw temper-tantrums and make dumb decisions and everything! And it's so funny! And best of all--it's supposed to be in English so I am not losing anything on a dub!
I love most of the characters for various reasons--Katara, because she's a compassionate-warrior lady, Sokka, because he is hilarious and smart and incredibly loyal and does the best that he can with what he has, and Zuko, because he's the 'hot, angsty one' *ducks tomatoes for the pun* with a compelling story and mood swings that typify a teenage boy's. And Iroh! Oh my gosh, I love Iroh, he is funny and wise and sneaky and all together made of awesome.
I don't feel any real connection to Toph or Aang, but I still really like them both--Aang because he is not a Gary Stu and makes mistakes and is 'just a goofy kid' who wants to play and has the weight of the world dropped on his shoulders and his whole life ripped away and is just trying to deal with it as best as he can, and Toph because she is tough and could crush people but doesn't, amazingly skilled and I look forward to seeing more of her. Even the bad guys are incredibly compelling--Azula is an awesome bad guy, even towards her friends. Even the secondary character are well rounded! It does my heart good!
So, yeah, I like the show. And on that note, I give you two Sokka quotes:
Sokka: You're awfully cute. But unfortunately for you, you're made of meat.
*Attacks, falls in the ground, gets stuck*
Sokka: You are one lucky little meat-creature.
Iroh: I know how you must feel about my nephew. But believe me when I tell you there is good inside him.
Sokka: Good inside him isn't enough! Why don't you come back when it's outside him too, OK?
Also, I took some steps towards getting myself things that I wanted for me this weekend. I haven't done that in a long time. It all started with a much needed manicure (I'm choosing to look at it as personal maintenance), led to me getting two ringtones for my phone (such wasteful, shameful extravagance!), and capped off today with my going icon shopping (note the wonderful Sokka quote above) and then more substantial shopping on Amazon.com.
I had been given gift!money in December--I have a strict policy about gift money, which is that when it is received unless I have pressing bills I absolutely may not use it for life necessities. So, with this gift!money, I purchased 6 fun books. I'm sure you'll hear the squeeing when the package comes (I qualified for free shipping, which of course I totally took--yay, free shipping!). Of course, I've already read three of those books...I just wanted to own them, they were that good. (Well, A Scholar of Magic wouldn't normally tempt past the point of resistance me if it didn't come as a nifty 'buy for less' deal with A College of Magics, which is a story made of awesome, though the ending has an evil (not so fun) twist.) (Since I started listing the read books in parenthesis, I may as well finish--the other book was By These Ten Bones which you may remember me raving about before.)
And this is why I don't get things for me--it snowballs. Yet, my nails look so shiny!
