Longshot didn’t often think of his father. He spoke of him even less, in word or in deed. But when he laid his long-fingered hand on the yew of the longbow, he couldn’t help but think of the man who taught him to shoot, but who wouldn’t teach him this weapon. This was the bow of a Yu Yan Archer, mighty and elite soldiers of the Fire Nation, and he was the get of an Earth Kingdom peasant. Running his hand across the smooth wood, Longshot sourly wondered at the fact his father had taught him at all. He’d surely never expected his son to lay his hand on a weapon like this.

He had to practice with it. The feel of it was different than his own bow, the amount of strength necessary to pull back the string, the power behind the shot far more intense. For a young man who’d trained himself to be understood in silence, every movement was a reflection of his thought. It was no wonder that he’d taken to training alone, wary of the tells he could not guard against and the thoughts he did not want made known but that the others could not help but see.

They knew each other so well. They left him alone.

Loudest of all was that day he drew, by memory, the mask of his father on his own face. For a Yu Yan Archer, this was a symbol of pride. For Jet’s mad plan to succeed, Longshot would have to know it from the inside as well as he knew it from the outside, he’d have to wear it, to be able to trace it on his face at a moment’s notice, to-

Smellerbee laid her small hand on his shoulder. He knew she could read his tension in that touch; he was drawn tight as one of his own bow strings. The space of heartbeats it took for him to compose himself before he looked at her was a language all their own, and like words harshly spoken, conveyed what he wished he hadn’t said.

“It’s okay,” she said. “I’ve still got your back.”

The words were unnecessary.

But now he was able to return the fierce smile glinting in her eyes.
