Sometimes when I buy a piece of clothing, I know it's going to be a favorite. My clunky brown boots, the style of Levi jeans I buy in each size as I go up and down and wear until they fall apart, my black Tshirt that makes me look skinny because it shows off the new curve I have while not accentuating that belly I still want to go away...these are favorite clothes I knew from the moment I put them on would be favorites.
Then there are the sneaky ones. My brown sweater is such a one. I bought it to wear to work over my thin cool clothes when the heat was too high at work one winter. It wasn't really what I wanted because I didn't think I liked knitted sweaters with zippers. But it was thin enough and nice enough to wear with my work clothes, tightly knit, so warm enough on cool mornings, and brown so it would go with 75% of the things in my closet. Then I wore all the time, even on weekends, even when I was sick. The zipper broke and I looked all over for a replacement and couldn't find one. I put it on my christmas list that I wanted a new sweater just like that brown sweater, and while I got two very nice sweaters, they just don't stack up.
Then it moved to my new office, where it's always cold. I noticed the hood is starting to come apart from the rest of the sweater. Today, I noticed that the shoulders were getting really thin.
I love this sweater. I've worn it many more days than not in the last three years, and it's giving up on me. I think I can sew the hood back on, and I can probably figure out how to extend the life of the shoulder. Still, I'm going to wear it until it actually falls apart on me. I hope that before that happens, someone will make another one just like it.
