The best thing about being somewhere that was still new was that he had an actual chance to explore. Sure, pirates sailed the seas and visited islands but the Whitebeard Pirates had never stayed on land for too long; some locals didn't take kindly to pirates and while the Marines sailed as well, they had bases on the land and hanging around was just asking for trouble. And a part of him still thought that if he looked around enough, he might remember when he had been here last because that would probably mean the world to Luffy - and to him too - but no, nothing had suddenly popped into his head.

But anyway, it was nice to be here, to be out in the fresh air which was something that'd take him time to get used to and when he approached the girl with her wagon of flowers he grinned brightly and waved.

Pirates could be polite and charming, contrary to popular opinion.

The man waving at her was unfamiliar, but that didn't stop her from going over to him and greeting him properly. Since she had been in Somarium she had been a bit more open with people. Surely Zack would be proud of her for that, because she really felt she didn't have anything to fear with the random inhabitants of the city. Besides, most of them were just stuck here like she was.

She reached back as she approached him, pulling forth a single yellow flower and offering it when she was close enough, "Hi there. I don't think we've met."

An even broader grin spread across his face as he accepted the flower and he needed to get a new hat - even though the thought of that pained him - because he wasn't about to start wearing a shirt and he didn't really have anywhere to wear the flower apart from behind his ear. Which was cool but still, he wasn't used to wearing anything like that before.

"Nope, I don't think we have," he replied and dipped in a bow - remembering to hold his new flower in place so he wouldn't lose it right away - smiling as he did so. "Portgas D. Ace. You?"

She watched, raising a hand to her lips to stifle a small laugh. Well, wasn't he sweet?

"It's a pleasure to meet you Ace. I'm Aerith. You're not a new arrival, are you?" she really couldn't keep up sometimes. Far too busy taking care of the shop and such to really notice. She felt kind of bad about it sometimes though.

Well, he wanted to know how to be polite for meeting an important person and it never hurt to extend courtesies to people. After all, they might feed you one day in the future.

"Nope, I've been here for," he looked up at the sky, counting back and wow, it had been so long already, "three months now. This time at least. I don't know how long I was around for before but I was apparently here, I just don't remember it. What about you?"

"Oh! You arrived about the same time I did then. This city is so big though it's no wonder we haven't met before." she smiled a bit brighter then, "I was here before, too, for a few months, then I left and came back. Funny how some people remember and others don't. Oh well." she shrugged, not really all that concerned with it.

"I don't even live in this part of the city," he explained because it was partly the reason why he was out and getting to know it better too, "I live by the Lake with my little brother and we didn't see each other much at home for the past few years so I guess I'm making up for lost time now."

And for all the time they wouldn't get to spend together back at home now that Ace was dead, something he'd have to bring up with Luffy before his dreams and Somarium got there first.

"I think it was a long time ago, maybe closer to a year if I go by all the things that I missed and all the changes that have taken place that I was last here."

"Your little brother is here? Well that's good, right? At least you get to spend some time with him!" she was always happy to hear that people had their loved ones around from home.

She tilted her head curiously, "A year? Hm. Well that's something I don't hear very often. Maybe Somarium decided to bring you back so you could spend time with your family again!" yup. totally it.

His timing had even been great - he'd arrived right after Luffy's crew had disappeared. It would have been nice to catch up with the rest of the Straw Hats seeing as Arabasta had been a long time ago and because he wouldn't be able to now but as long as he was there for Luffy, that was what mattered. That and Luffy not finding out that his big brother died after all.

"Did it do the same with you? Have you got family or friends around here?" He hoped so; she was nice and cheerful and there had been a distinct lack of nice and cheerful people in his recent life back home.

She would feel so bad if she ended up learning that he died, and if she knew Luffy at all. It must have been hard to have all your friends with you and then get left behind.

She paused, thinking for a bit. Well, considering the fact that Cid had been her father about a week ago when all that weird stuff happened, she kind of wanted to count him in the 'family' department, "A few! A lot of them are from different times though, so I didn't remember them at first."

Ace had been unaffected by that weirdness and while it had freaked him out, it had come at the greatest time because he'd been able to make Luffy's birthday gift without Luffy being around to ask questions and poke and prod and generally be all rubbery and Luffy-ish.

"So...people that knew you but not the other way round? Is it really weird?" This was really a perfect opportunity to ask some questions he wasn't sure he wanted to ask the population at large. "Did they tell you anything at all?"

She shrugged, "A little, but if we were friends in the future, then I told them we could be friends here and now. It would only make sense, right? I guess it is strange to meet people you don't know just yet, and they seem to know all about you. but they're good people."

Then she had to pause to think, "Not really! Then again I didn't prod too much for info."

Ace took the time to consider that as well and it made sense. He thought. It seemed like it made sense anyway and so he smiled and nodded (still missing his hat). "I guess it does. As long as you all agree and get along, that's the important part. You can make new memories with them here."

Hmmm, that was a good point there too.

"Is it that you just don't want to know or does it just not really matter that much?"

"Exactly what I said!" about the new memories bit at least. She had told Tifa that when they first met months back, and she'd mention it again if she had to. She wasn't going to let messed up time lines ruin things with her friends.

"I guess it just doesn't really matter too much. Not right now."

"So what do you do here?" Because some people had actual jobs. People who didn't happen to be Ace who really didn't bother with the actual 'buying' food part. Vegetables were easy enough to get hold of and he could hunt and cook at the same time and now that the boat was done, he and Luffy could go out and fish properly and see if there was anything interesting in the middle of the lake.

He doubted that last part though.
