For those wandering the outskirts of the Residential and Shopping Districts of Somni City, there is a curious commotion occurring out in the desert sands. Cameras flashing, journalists furiously jotting down surprising new facts, reporters scrambling for an interview with a certain tall man dressed in a smashing, stately black-and-orange-ribboned top hat. He is smiling cordially and humbly at all the cameras and recording devices, a modest but heavy trunk set at his side and a cup of tea (yes, in the middle of the desert) in hand.
It is a man known among academia as the rising star of archaeology at the University of Somarium, Professor Hershel Layton. He is a man known equally for his fondness for puzzles and a good, strong cup of tea as he is for his quick intellect and admirable research.
Behind him are the beginnings of a
sunken desert ruin, recently discovered and only partially dug out from the wafting, rolling sands. There is one sunken building in particular that is the most resplendent, almost completely freed from the sands and swarming with young interns and the rest of Layton's archaeological dig team. For those who are lucky enough to glimpse inside the building, they would find a deep pit, tens of yards into the ground. At the bottom is a shimmering, organic, swirling flood mass, not unlike staring into the eye of a violent storm.
Those unaffected by the strange affliction that has overcome much of Somarium's "Visiting" population will recognize this spot as the very same area of the infamous Sinkhole that swallowed the floating castle, Reverein, many months ago.
Those who creep close to the commotion will hear Professor Layton's cheerful and gentlemanly voice floating above the clamor at this doubtlessly significant discovery:
"Yes, that is our most curious discovery so far. I am sorry to say that I am still working through the evidence, but I do have a hunch about our black lake, so to speak. In fact, I believe we have no further to look than our very own functioning Dream Gate to puzzle together the use for this structure and the 'treasure' inside.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you all to explore for yourself and take all the photographs you like. But, please, do watch your step and keep a fair distance away from our ropes. Safety is always our primary concern!"
