The past week had been hectic to say the least. It wasn't the fact that being the only female in the manor once again was what was getting to her. It was the heavy cloud of Jace's moodiness and anger and Max's own sadness that made the atmosphere absolutely unbearable. Jessamine's own stress hadn't helped either. When she had found out that Isabelle had been murdered, she hadn't been quite sure how to react. Shadowhunters were meant to accept that people died and move on, but this was quite different. She had become very good at hiding her own feelings for years since she entered the Institute and it had become something she prided herself on. Getting dragged along to search for Isabelle's killer hadn't helped either. It had been fruitless and besides, from what she had gathered, it sounded very much like a Downwolder had done the deed.

Isabelle's murder had shifted something in her though. Jessamine had been truly terrified. Knowing that even in a dream world that someone, even someone as tough as Izzy, could be killed scared her ( ... )

If there was anything good for a depressing moment, it was Jessamine. Isabelle dragged her eyes up, keeping every sign of potential tears out of her expression - the only possible tell was the faint wetness just above her lashes - and forced a small pursing of her lips before pulling a dagger from where its familiar weight hung at her belt. Feeling oddly reassured with it in hand, she turned it once between her fingers and tucked it into her hair, piling it up into a messy bun. She would double-check later that it was nothing more than residual blood from Sebastian's attack.

"Nothing," Izzy replied casually, keeping her voice as even as possible. Doubtless word had spread about what had happened to her - what had happened to her? It wasn't like she could come up with some cover story at this point. One thing she could learn from Jessamine, though, was how much time had passed. "So, did you miss me?"

Jessamine was the queen of hiding how she was feeling and while she didn't notice the wet eyelashes, she knew that body posture from anywhere. It was someone who was trying terribly hard to hide something that they didn't want others to know. Still. It wasn't like her to pry, especially when it was someone like Isabelle that she was talking to.

A little flush of embarrassment started to creep up onto her cheeks and Jessamine sniffed fiddling with her parasol. "Oh, please. The quiet was quite a welcome change although I didn't get much of that, not with Jace stomping around the place trying to find you. Not to mention Max was moping." Her eyes darted back to Isabelle and she tried her best to glare. "You made them worried."

Even if Isabelle weren't the type of person to ignore and not dwell on problems - either her own or those of others - she still probably wouldn't have let Jessamine know what was bothering her. Even if she could pinpoint just one or two little reasons. Her head was swimming, both with the effort of forced recognition and of trying to remember specific details, and she wanted nothing more than to get back to the manor and crash.

She noticed more than people gave her credit for, though, and the blush didn't go unnoticed; she did, however, offer Jessamine the benefit of the doubt and not comment, passing the small curving at the corners of her mouth off as a reaction to her words. "Nice to know. Remind me later; I'll make them dinner or something." A joke. She was recovering faster than she thought.

"Everything's the same otherwise?" Her hand shifted to touch the ruby tied around her throat where it quietly thrummed a demonic presence. Unsurprising, but not a pleasant reminder of what she'd left.

Her eyebrow raised at that and a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips. "I'm sure that they would be so overcome with joy to see you that they would suffer through that." Even though she was joking, she could see it happening. The attitude in that house had been a complete change from its usual chaotic feeling.

She gave a shrug turning back to face Isabelle. "More or less. There's been an unusual amount of fog that makes people believe that there are people from home here." Her voice turned a shade bitter as she remembered her own experience and how her hopes had been dashed. "Another one of this world's cruel jokes."

"It's only been a week?" Her expression was briefly coloured with surprise before she pursed her lips again, deciding that time did indeed travel at a strange pace as compared to reality. She had probably been in Alicante a week already, had spent another at home recovering from everything that had happened on Valentine's ship. A lump rose in her throat at the thought of all the death, both at the ship and now, in Alicante.

Isabelle shivered, then shook her head. "So I guess we have to watch for weird foggy patches as we head back to the manor, then? I don't really want to see anyone from home who isn't actually here."

"Yes..." Jessamine's voice trailed off, slightly confused as to what Isabelle was talking about. "You sound surprised." She was about to ask if she remembered being murdered but that wouldn't have been polite at all and she quickly bit her tongue at that.

She merely nodded in agreement at that. Those cards had been painful enough to watch and then the fog wasn't much better. All it did was remind her of the things that she had lost and that only made her more angry and frustrated than anything. "A lovely idea and one that I actually agree with." The girl moved to go but then she paused looking back at Isabelle still finding it haunting to see her there when all she could imagine was a mangled body. "Are you alright to walk?"

Izzy eyed Jessamine momentarily, opening her mouth to reply, then shut it promptly. How much did she really want to tell the other girl? They didn't really know each other that well, and to suddenly divulge that she remembered far more than she did the last time she was around... It didn't strike her as overly prudent. So she moved on.

"Of course I am. What kind of Shadowhunter do you take me for?" Isabelle asked, smirking slightly as she strode on past Jessamine, squaring her shoulders to keep herself poised and at the ready. She wasn't about to let herself take up the rear - not when she recalled so clearly being taken advantage of while distracted. She probably wouldn't run alone for a while, either. At least if Jessamine was behind her, Izzy could guarantee that she was somewhat safe.

As Isabelle breezed right past her she sighed and rolled her eyes. Shadowhunters and their pride. It would never change, would it? She followed after the girl, catching up to her a lot easier than she would have if it had been Jace. This past week alone she'd done more running than she ever would have liked to do.

"I was merely asking out of curtesy."

If Izzy ever had anything, it was her pride. It kept her moving. But she allowed Jessamine to catch up to her, appreciating the company more than she would ever even hint. "If I weren't, what would you have done?" Isabelle asked, sliding a subtly challenging glance the blonde's way. "Just called Jace or something?"

"Well, unless you wanted me to try and carry you home then I suppose that would have to be the option I would have to use, isn't it?" She caught Isabelle's glance and gave her one of her own. She twirled her parasol idly above her before speaking again. "But I suppose I could have lent you a shoulder to lean on even though that would be terribly unlady-like."

"Lucky thing I'm fine, then." Though for exactly how much longer was beyond her comprehension. Isabelle wouldn't wait until she was in her own room, in her own bed. Alone, preferably.

She knew there was no way Max would let her just disappear again without spending some time with him first - she wasn't sure she even wanted to leave him in another room once she got her arms back around her baby brother - but at the same time, Izzy wasn't sure she could just sit there with him and not think of how, when she went back again, he wouldn't be there.

"Besides, you won't have to take care of me. Jace'll do that."
