He'd been intent on finishing his work, thus the voice surprised him somewhat. Sword came immediately to hand, but seeing no overt threat, never left its sheath. But Sephiroth paused, puzzlement creeping over his face to see a talking animal nearby, addressing him rather intelligently.

Unabashed at his unclothed state, the tall General gave the creature a polite nod; some sort of equs, it seemed. Equines were rare in Midgar, but not totally unheard of. And the fact that this one possessed the ability to speak was indeed a novelty.

Nevertheless, it seemed this world was full of surprises, therefore Sephiroth resolved to puzzle it out later. For now, he stood unflinching and answered in his quiet baritone, "I admit I was surprised to encounter her in the lake." A glimmer of mirth sparked in deep green. "She was indeed a worthy companion."

The animal's latter comment sparked a tiny frown between his brows and Sephiroth paused. He'd come here to forget his troubles, by Shiva. Feigned nonchalance prompted the shrug of a bare shoulder. "Perhaps, but they are fleeting. And will be resolved soon. One way or the other."

"Put away your sword child," she said without even eying the masamune. What a silly sort of blade to wield. But all weapons were nonsense to her.

"The trifles of men are always fleeting," to her at least. She had seen enough wars and the petty fights to know that there was never any real reason for them. Some nonsense over land they didn't actually own, land that had been there before them and would be there after them. Or nonsense over love and religion or whatever else humans decided to fight about. Even having experienced love, she could not think about starting a war with someone over it, yet the Greeks went for one woman.

Unicorn merely gazed at the boy, sensing some sort of power in him but she paid it little mind. Rather she merely shook her head and started to walk away.

Hearing such from a beast prompted the slightest of grins. Oddly enough, he acquiesced with a gracious nod, lowering the sheathed blade to the carpet of green next to his coat.

Sephiroth watched her watching him, his own gaze curious as he gazed at the lovely thing. He'd never before seen the like and somehow doubted he never would again, outside of this strange new world. But then, perhaps the gilded creature was a prisoner here, just as all the rest.

It surprised him a bit when she said nothing more, but turned away, presumably to again disappear into the trees near the lakeshore. Some internal prod prompted him to gently call out, "Curiosity satisfied, gentle creature?"

She stopped at that, no, not her title. But he was polite, even if he didn't know her. A change from the usual two reactions received. She gazed at him for a long moment in silence. She seemed like she could stand perfectly still without a single movement. Finally she bowed her head to the boy.

"If that is what you wish to call it. You should come more often. Nessie is in need of those not afraid to swim with her. You will have my protection, for now. In this forest."

Sephiroth nodded. "I would enjoy it." He would, indeed. The experience with the lake creature had been greatly needed; he felt a thousand worlds lighter after exiting the water.

And likewise for Sephiroth, any reaction other than rage, blind hatred or animosity -even apathy- was a welcome distraction.

"I thank you, then. My name is Sephiroth, should you ever have need of me."

He honestly didn't know why she might, but it never hurt to offer, after all.

"If you are in need of a name, you may call for Amalthea and I will answer to it. Sephiroth, are you capable of wielding magic?" the question may or may not seem odd to him but she couldn't place what she sensed in him.

Amalthea. Definitely an outlandish name, but it seemed fitting. Her question surprised him somewhat; he'd heard of "magic", but had never seen it truly performed.

In answer, he reached for his coat and withdrew the bracer which housed his softly glowing materia. Extracting one of the orbs from the slot, he held it in the palm of his hand, its soft purple glow almost palpable.

"Perhaps this is what you sense," he told her. "This is magic from my world, called materia. It is harnessed energy from our Planet's core, crystallized into different forms. This particular one holds the power of Thunder, and is generally used in battle." He rolled the little marble to his fingers, extending it for her perusal.

"There are others, of course. Some which cure and others which heighten the caster's natural abilities. The stronger a caster's will, the stronger the materia responds."

Which was why his own were mastered at their very highest levels.

She leaned in a little close to study glowing orbs. Her horn glowing softly and the materia pulsed a little brighter but she merely pulled back and it went back to it's constant state. She truly wondered at men sometimes, and their need to try and control nature and the earth, the need to control everything and anything around them. Their illusion of control was a curious thing. They had none, of course, yet they persisted otherwise.

"No... that is not what I sense, though it is a part of it," she tilted her head as she gazed at him. "You are very different for a man."

Ha. Wasn't that last statement the truth. Sephiroth snorted wryly as he replaced the materia into his bracer and shrugged into his coat. "ShinRa's engineering at its finest," he replied somewhat bitterly. "Or so I'm told."

Unlike the other SOLDIERs under his command, he was blissfully ignorant of the cocktail which coursed through his blood and made up his dazzlingly unique DNA. All in all, it mattered very little; Sephiroth wasn't one to believe his own propaganda, no matter how much PR might promote it.

"ShinRa?" she raised a brow and then shook her head. "Men are incapable of changing themselves at their core."

"The company for which I work back home." And didn't it seem so far away now? It was quite odd, at that; having no office to report to, no executives to come pestering, no troop performances to oversee, no evaluations to worry over.

But her latter comment was puzzling and Sephiroth frowned a bit. "We are who we are. Regardless of blood. Strength lies in the will, or so it seems to me."

"Men seem the need to change themselves, rather than accept they are men."

Sephiroth shrugged a shoulder, unable to concede the point. Two examples sprang quite readily to mind.

"Some do. Others simply carry on, doing what they must. It's a matter of honor, after all."
