It was early morning, a new year, and the sun had yet to rise. Ukitake wasn't in Soul Society for this day, no, but he had made plans regardless and he would carry them out. As he sat by the lake on a blanket, wearing a kimono Leon had given to him for Christmas, he thought of how lucky he was. Lucky both here and back home. He and his friends had survived the War and even though they had suffered, they had another chance to carry on with their duties and lives. And that was the important part. Even though his friends weren't in Somarium, Ukitake still counted himself lucky for having made new friends, and for befriending wonderful young ones. He treasured what they had all become to each other, even in such a short time.
He sipped his tea and continued watching the horizon, looking for slivers of warm sunlight to crawl their way to his sight, signifying the victory of day. Ukitake also considered himself lucky to enjoy this in warm weather, though it was still pretty chilly at that hour. And he had gotten over his bout of illness just in time. If those weren't promising signs for the future, he wasn't sure what were.
He had no problems being by himself, but Ukitake couldn't help looking back toward where the cottage was. Leon had said he would join him today, and though he didn't want to wake the other man when he left, Ukitake still hoped the other would remember. Beautiful sights were made more so when shared with a friend, after all.
