Sheldon had told Leonard from the start that his infatuation with Penny would not work out. The variables and factors of the two were simply incompatiable and even when they had gotten together, Sheldon had been right about the outcome in the end. Being the possesor of higher intelligence than Leonard, Sheldon had seen that when they had arrived in this strange dream world and shortly their arrivals, Penny's, he knew that Leonard's infatutation with her was never going to end.
So when she left, Sheldon thought that his friend would get over it faster and move on with their dream life. If Penny wasn't here any longer than obviously it was clear that she wasn't Leonard's 'dream girl' in any sense of the word now. He had tried to make Leonard see that, but of course, being Leonard, he hadn't listened and sulked and sulked. He was still sulking now and Penny had been gone for weeks! And that's how Sheldon supposed that they found themselves at a local pet store in Somni looking at pets in order to fill the metamorphical hole in Leonard's heart. Sheldon had agreed to come along and to having a pet in the apartment but only on one condition: It had to be a cat.
Why? Because Sheldon liked cats of course.
