Drip-drip-drip. Plip-plip-plip. The stones walls were covered in grime and dirt. Everything was dingy and it almost felt like there could be grit in your teeth. The only light that could be seen was in the hallway from a little flickering candle drowning in its own wax.
Drip-drip-drip. Plip-plip-plip.
Wind howled from the window high up in the wall, rain seeping in through the thin bar windows to trail down the wall like tears and form a puddle against the wall. There was soft scratching and clicking noises. Perhaps from a rat scurrying in the darkness, perhaps from a cockroach moving about in content in the darkness.
Drip-drip-drip. Plip-plip-plip.
In a corner far from the high window was a little shaking huddled mass. Every breath the little figure exhaled was visible in the freezing cell. She had been crying for hours and she didn't even remember what she did to upset the Queen of Hearts. But then... you only needed to stand to upset her. But she had been imprisoned for execution. A black ribbon had been wrapped around her neck. Red-rimmed blue eyes gazed at the large wrought-iron door and the little barred window that showed the candle.
Every once and a while she would hear the clink-clink-clink of the guards' armor. The whispered time of her execution.
She hid her face in her knees, trying to keep warm and pretend she wasn't being surrounded in the darkness.
A soft sob spilled from her lips and her shoulders trembled.
