It wasn't the fall that had surprised Alec but the images he thought he saw in the dark.
He was a Shadowhunter, not some paranoid mundane, but as he landed, he couldn't help but think back to those images with a shudder - demons reaching out poison-tipped claws, friends and family being ripped away, Magnus fighting a demon and...
He shuddered.
He was suddenly glad for the dark, thankful that he could have one tiny moment of weakness that few, if any, would probably see. But then, he was also thankful for his Shadowhunter blood. The Sight that let him see through glamours, that gave him powerful night-vision, not as powerful as that of the average Downworlder, but more-so than that of a mundane. After all, demons only came out in the dark, and what good was a Shadowhunter who couldn't see demons?
Bracing himself against a nearby wall, he let his eyesight adjust. People were milling about, and because of that, it was hard to spot the people he was looking for. He had snuck out during the night, trying not to alert Magnus, trying to do things as quietly as possible, even though it was hard to do anything quietly with the damn wings. But, on the train and even before the fall, he'd gotten the ugly suspicion that he wasn't the only one who had sneaked out of their mansion... and that made him nervous.
Because if anything he'd envisioned during that fall proved to be true, he wondered if he'd actually make it out of this alive.
He felt around the back of his pants - suddenly thankful that something about his costume was practical - to where he'd pocketed a seraph blade before leaving. He took it now, named it, and watched as it lit up, giving off a dim glow in the darkness, illuminating him ever-so-slightly as he started to make his way through the crowd of people towards the other side of the room, all the while looking for faces he recognized.
