[Alec had gone to the library to brush up on his demonology. Of course, the only books he could find on the subject were big, dusty, and full of useless information that he either a) all ready knew or b) felt were completely bogus. And so, he had quickly grown agitated

[Alec had kind of been zoning out for some time now, so at the sound of the voice, he starts and looks up. He supposed he should have been used to meeting random strangers, but as he was not much of a social creature, he didn't think it was something he would ever get used to.]

Uh, no. It's just about demons. [He shrugs.]

[How to explain this to a mundane...]

Because I kill demons. That's why.

[He thinks this is the simplest, most straight-forward answer he can give to a mundane.]

[The "fascinating" comment reminded him of that mundane-turned-vampire friend of Clary's and for a moment, he thinks of back home where he used to fight demons on a pretty regular basis.]

[re-focusing on the conversation] Uh, yeah, they do. But mundanes usually can't see them. At least... where I'm from, they can't see demons.

[Wow a mundane that didn't get mad at being called a mundane. It seemed like a first for Alec. Although, he belatedly realized, he hadn't exactly directly called the man a mundane, so maybe that had something to do with it.]

Yeah, that's probably the simplest way of putting it. Shadowhunters define a mundane as someone who can't see through glamours. You mundanes don't usually see things the way Shadowhunters and Downworlders do, but, that doesn't seem to be how this world works.

[Oh great. Now the mundane was sitting across from him. Why did they always seem to want to talk to him? He's trying to be polite, though, even though he's not really great at it.]

A warlock, a vampire, a werewolf, or a faery. Well, there are other categories, but those are the main ones. Shadowhunters call them Downworlders. You mundanes can't seem them because they usually wear glamours to blend in.

Who are you, by the way?

[Alec might have had a Shadowhunter schooling, but he's not completely clueless on history - just modern day stuff.]

Leonardo da Vinci? The painter? Really?

[He's kind of not believing you right now, because, uh, you should be dead... or at least look really, really old.]

[But... but... how the hell can you be...?]

Uh, Alec Lightwood.

[He's still staring at you, baffled.]
