Even if Hiccup had been really hurt by Toothless's disappearance at the beginning of the month, he was too irrational when the dragon first vanished to think about the fact that he would see him again when he woke up. It still didn't stop him from missing him though...
But the second that huge floating castle dropped out of the sky, he had no time to be depressed. Suddenly there was a flood of people who needed to either repair damage to crumbled buildings, or supplies for rescue efforts.
... It wasn't like a dragon attack, but Hiccup was used to working fast in tough situations, and you don't need electricity to keep a forge going. During the whole disaster he was continually working to fill the demand for new tools, hammers, shovels, and whatnot, and small metal repairs.
So, anyone passing nearby, there is constant noise coming from his shop, with lots of hammer smashing, and metallic clanging.
