[And next to Basil, there is suddenly a cat, purring.]

Why a cat, a dog, and a man? I daresay a fish dreams too. Or anteaters.

Can a fish stay in place for that long? And hello Cheshire puss.

[She picked him up and promptly placed him in her lap, stroking the top of his head down to the base of his tail.]

Why wouldn't they?

[Purrrrrrr. The kitty rubs his head against Alice's hand cheerfully.]

I daresay you couldn't outstare a fish. Their sense of patience must be something to behold.

Then if I cannot out-stare a fish can they sleep at all?

That depends. What do you think sleep is?

It's.... I'm not sure... what a curious question. You close your eyes and dream or hours pass in seconds.

What about those who do not have eyes to close? Or eyelids to close them? Can they not sleep, then?

Flowers seem to sleep just fine without eyes.

Then I daresay that though you cannot out-stare a fish, they can sleep just fine!

I've not ever seen a fish sleep. [Continues to stroke his spine.]

I don't think a fish has ever seen you sleep either, Alice. It all depends on the 'when', doesn't it?

But I can't sleep in water.
