[It was the rattling of the door that alerted Valjean to the presence of a stranger outside of his home trying to force their way in.

He had already retired for the evening. Though having long past gone to bed, the reformed convict who had lived on the run for so long had awakened instantly at the minimal sound, leaping to his feet and descending the stairs within seconds. Without making a single noise, he expertly made his way to the front door before unbolting the dead lock and swinging it open to face his unknown transgressor.

Surprise flooded him abruptly as he recognized the man standing before him, hand latched tightly onto the door knob. Jean Valjean would never has suspected the younger man to be attempting to break into his home.]

Javert! What are you doing?

[Caught. Is this what it feels like for the lamb to corner the lion? For a split second he stares at Valjean owlishly, nearly expressionless.]

... This is your home.

[He said it so surely and decisively, and yet, that is an odd thing for Javert to say, isn't it? He glares severely at the number on the side of the cottage, as if it were to blame for his misstep.]

... [There is a long stretch of silence, as Valjean waits for Javert to finish his very odd train of thought.

He doesn't continue.]

Yes, it is my home. [His tense posture relaxes slightly.] Why are you here at his late hour? [If it was anyone but the man in front of him, Valjean would have showed a bit more concern and asked what was wrong. For Javert though, that just didn't seem right considering their past.]

[The trance appears to lift from Javert's shoulders, and he settles an intense stare on Valjean. What he says next surprises even himself.]

I must speak with you.

[It was murmured in a growl, and his face twisted in self-disgust once the words were out. Yet he still spoke with the authority that so spooked Valjean overt the years.]
