It had been so hard to not call in to work. It hurt, to the point it was all she could think about. She told herself it was just birthday party nerves.
She should have gone straight to the Cafe, but she had to spend just a few minutes with him. She knew she'd feel less anxious afterwards.
She stopped in at the cafe at 4, spent two hours doing what she could to help set up the Cafe for the party, then disappeared for an hour to clean up from work and get ready. Already she couldn't wait to see him again. Even just holding his hand would feel better.
As the clock turned to 7, Aya took a final glance around the room. All the decorations were in place, the tables were ready for guests and snacks, an area had been set aside and designated for gifts to be left, the music was playing. She'd recruited some help getting her hair into a fancy updo and made a special shopping trip just for the dress.
In spite of the ongoing somersaults in her stomach and the tightness in her muscles, well-- call it crazy but everything looked ready. All it needed now were the guests.
