Edward is holding a dangerously tall pile of books when he hears the commotion - but curiosity and recognition overpower logic as he steps past a bookshelf to peer around the mountain of books in his arms with a quirked eyebrow.

Of course Maka would also be at the library. ".... What did you lose?"

He doesn't wait for a response, stepping towards a table to set the leaning stack of books down before it topples over completely, still watching her curiously.

"Ed!"

The level of urgency in her voice was apparent, as was the gravity of the situation. Maka pivoted on her feet where she stood to face him, where seconds before she had been standing as high as her toes would allow her, skimming a higher up shelf. And then, in the next moment, Maka was suddenly next to him.

"Ed, have you seen my school notebook?" Maka asked, sounding desperate. "I left it right there--" She sharply pointed in the direction of a nearby table. "So it couldn't have gone far in the past ten minutes!"

He tensed as she seemed to just appear beside him - holding both arms out to steady the pile of books before they fell to the floor. He turned, back to the stack of books as he tried to follow her frantic questioning.

"Don't worry," He started, putting his hands up in a 'calm down' gesture as he scanned the area. "Like you said, it couldn't get far. Notebooks don't have legs. Did you check under the table?" Ed glanced around at nearby tables, eyebrow quirked. "Maybe someone else picked it up, thinking it was their's. It's not the end of the world, we'll find it. ... Did you ask anyone else, yet?"

'Not the end of the world'? Maka promptly decided that Edward simply had no idea what he was talking about, nor did he understand just how important this was.

"Just a few people," Maka answered, but not without giving Edward a narrowed look first. She knelt down to peek under the table as soon as it were suggested, though, and when there was nothing but the legs of chairs and carpet in sight, she gave a deflated sigh. "But none of them had seen it, either!"

Maka pushed herself up to her feet again, devastation written all over her features. "How could I have been so stupid?" she murmured aloud, eying Edward's pile of books. Nope. No notebook there, either. "How am I supposed to study now..."

Of course he didn't. Ed didn't actually put effort into his school work, he was a natural. He did amazingly well in grade school and promptly dropped out to pursue something else when he got older. Important and school work just didn't translate well for him, now if it was a book she was missing, and not some class notes... He'd be tearing the place apart to help her find it, with all that urgency she had over it.

At her answer he kind of blinked before shrugging. "Are you sure you left it here? Maybe it's at another table, where else did you have it- or it could ha...ve.... accidentally been put on a shelf." The last part was muttered, because there was no way to tell where it could have accidentally wound up, and turning the entire library upside down to find one notebook was a long term commitment he wasn't sure he was ready for. "We'll find it." He repeated, with more conviction than before - more because he was trying to convince himself as well as her.

"It was definitely here," Maka replied firmly with both hands planted at her hips. She frowned again, if only because Edward had been questioning her so much already; he should have known by now she wasn't that forgetful!

The frown faded away quickly enough afterward, then replaced with newfound determination. "Yeah, we will." Maka paused for a moment, now gaining a worried look. "At least... I really hope so. I'll never be able to take all our final exams without regrets if I don't!"

"Okay, okay. It was definitely here." He put up his hands defensively, "I'm just trying to think where else it could be. If she said anything about him acting like she was forgetful, he would have retorted that he was just trying to be thorough since she needed the thing so bad. He just knew how easy it was to lose one item in a pile of work, and if anyone could challenge his own reputation for just that it was probably Maka.

He scanned the immediate area again, before shrugging. "Retrace your steps. I know you said it was here, but where else were you? Maybe we should check the aisles and bookshelves, too." Ed didn't wait for a response before starting for the nearest shelf, but paused - half turning at her last words, and truly showing what little devotion he had to school work. "If you don't find it, can't you just ... Borrow and copy someone else's notes?"
