Yuri wandered near the tree, much smaller now than he had been before he used that weird card. (Being in an eleven year old body again was WEIRD.) He had gotten some strange message on his Dreamberry about a Secret Santa...? Whatever THAT meant... anyway, apparently he was supposed to get a gift of some sort for someone named Haruhi? He'd never even met her (was it even a her? It sounded like a female name, but he didn't really know) before, but he was hoping maybe someone else had, so that he could find out what sort of thing to get her. He didn't really know much about gift-giving. In the lower quarter, where money was tight, they had usually made gifts, or given some sort of service (cooking or cleaning or things of that nature) for free. But they had all known each other... they'd never just given random gifts to people they didn't know. Was that normal in other places?
Well, whatever. By the looks of it he wasn't the only one confused by the message, anyway.
Clara had been just watching from above, happy to see all the people finally for the first time. When she spotted Yuri looking a little lost, however, she couldn't help but try and help it. It was just in her nature, the poor girl.
So she quickly flew down and smiled at him. "Hello! Is there something I can help you with?"
Yuri was a bit startled. He wasn't scared of ghosts, really, and he knew that Somarium had them, but to be suddenly spoken to by one was a little unnerving nonetheless. Back on Terca Lumereis, ghosts were enemies to be fought and defeated (particularly the ones on that weird ghost ship), but this one hardly looked or acted like an enemy.
"H-hello," he said, once he'd gotten over the shock a little. "I was just trying to figure out what exactly a 'Secret Santa' was. We don't really have anything like that where I'm from. And I was wondering who..." and here he lowered his voice, just in case Haruhi was around somewhere so she wouldn't overhear, "...Haruhi was. I'm... supposed to get a gift for her...?"
Clara smiled at his question. How could a world not know the wondrous tradition of a Secret Santa? But that just made her all the happier to know that she was helping in introducing these fine people to tradition.
"A Secret Santa is when you are assigned to get a gift for someone without telling them! It's really in the spirit of Christmas where you get your friends and loved ones gifts. Secret Santas just allow people to get others gifts they normally wouldn't have. In this case, it helps you meet new people!"
She looked up thoughtfully. "As for Haruhi...I'm not really sure I know her," she said in soft apologetic voice, also not wanting to make the mistake and get Yuri in trouble. That would be horrible! "I don't know who all the people are...sorry..."
Yuri thought over her description of a Secret Santa, then nodded. He wasn't really sure what 'Christmas' was either, but decided it probably had something to do with all the decorations everywhere. "Well, I guess if we're all here, we might as well get to know each other, right?"
He was a bit disappointed that the girl... ghost... girl... didn't seem to know Haruhi; that would've made things a bit easier. "So you don't know her, huh.... Well, that's all right. I suppose I'll probably find out who she is eventually. Someone has to know her, right?" He made a mental note to ask around later - subtly, of course.
"So what's your... name...?" Yuri asked hesitantly. He wasn't even sure if ghosts had names, but he supposed that maybe ghosts that seemed a little more human might?
Clara nodded. "I know a few people have met her...or I would hope. Just make sure to do it discreetly! It would be a shame if she found out before you could give her the present."
She then smiled cheerfully at him. "My name is Clara!"
"Nice to meet you, Clara," he said with a smile. "I'm Yuri." He almost held out his hand for her to shake on instinct, but realized that... ghosts couldn't shake hands, so he left it at his side.
"So, are you the only ghost here, or are there others?" he asked. He was pretty sure he had heard "ghosts" mentioned in the plural, but Clara was the only one he'd met so far, and he hadn't seen any others.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Yuri!" she said happily with a bit of a curtsy.
"There are a few others..." she said slowly, glancing around as if unsure if she should really say any more. Well, it couldn't hurt tell the ones that are here, right? They were making themselves more public anyway...right?
"Uhm, well I'm sure you've heard of Her Majesty. And she has two daughters though they tend to come and go. And then there's me and three others who are helping out. But there are more," she said quickly. "They just don't come out as often."
Haruhi had come to investigate the tree and ghosts as well; she knew what a Secret Santa exchange was, of course, but she had no idea who the person she had received was, or how to contact...him? That made it a lot harder than a regular Secret Santa.
She noticed a boy near the tree, one who seemed a lot younger than the other people she had met here. She walked over to him. "Hello?"
"Hmm?" Yuri looked up at the sound of a voice to find a girl standing near him. There didn't seem to be anyone else in their immediate vicinity, so he assumed she was addressing him. "Oh, hi. Erm, you are...?"
No way! Of all the luck, he ran into the one person he was looking for. Of course, the warning on his voicemail was still in his mind, and so he kept his face as neutral as he could. At least, until she brought up how young he was, at which point his expression turned to confusion.
"Young? I...." And then he realized it. Of course. He was eleven currently. He laughed. "Oh, right. No, I'm not. Actually, I'm twenty-one. I found this card and... well, it's a long story." He extended his hand. "My name is Yuri Lowell."
She reached out and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you...Yuri-san?" His name sounded Western, so if he would really twenty-one he should be Lowell-san, but he certainly didn't look twenty-one... this place was far too confusing for honorifics. "A card? Like the cards that were switching everyone's genders a while ago?"
"There was a card switching people's genders?" This was the first he'd heard of that, though.... "I did hear something about a card that switched people's bodies from a friend of mine. But yeah, I assume it's probably very similar to that. One minute the card was in my hand, the next I was, well, like this." He indicated his much smaller than usual form. "I don't actually remember sliding the card through the Dreamberry, but I must have at some point."
"I heard that there was, yes. I didn't know there was a kind of card that changed your age, though." She looked at him carefully. "So...you're usually twenty-one?"
"Yeah, I'm usually twenty-one." Yuri confirmed. He examined his tiny arms and hands. "It's kinda weird to be so small again. I feel a little defenseless. My sword is a little too big to carry around with me." He made a face. "I'm not used to that."
Well, whatever. By the looks of it he wasn't the only one confused by the message, anyway.
