The lights were dizzying.

Inspector Javert sunk into a seat in the café, a hand to his forehead. That morning he left his flat with a metaphorical cacophony of explosions going off in his head and his pockets stuffed full of self-remedies. Splendid, how the Devil timed his river-dances in one's head. Javert had once believed himself removed from bodily ailments such as his relatively frequent migraigne attacks upon his death. Apparently he was marginally incorrect in that matter, though with his body intact, he might have guessed sooner. Before heading out on an early patrol, he stopped into the station to sign several reports in a dazed pallor. That did not last long. Barely ten minutes passed when he mumbled absently about his field duties and a scheduled doctoral visit to a certain female scientist and slowly wandered back on out.

On an average day, Javert swung by the café, picked up a large mug of coffee, briefly prodded the locale for information and valuable gossip about the people of Somarium and went about his business. Today he spared some time to listen to the gossip of the café and self-medicate so that he may better focus on his work. Luckily Tamaki's establishment was located early in his patrol route, and it would take but a moment. A 'minor dizzy spell' associated with his migraines is taken care of simply enough. Requesting a day off was not something that would occur to a steadfast, dedicated man such as Javert; there was little reason he could not urge himself to perform to standards.

Javert had foregone his daily bitter 'patrolling' coffee for some warm water and the use of a tea strainer. It was an herbal home remedy he had familiarized himself with long ago, and it had become a habit to take a special blend of tea with a splash of vodka or gin to smooth it down. But discomfort did now allow him to sit still for long. Soon his large fingers were manipulating a small square sheet of thin paper, rolling it between his fingers, tapping it against the table. It was a newer medicinal drug he had only recently begun to try to variable effect. On some days, it would improve his alertness marginally and he could continue his duties as normal. On others, he would be sluggish and hungry with little change in his condition. Those days put a grimace to his face, but he found both options preferable to laudanum, which was not only expensive but left him in little better than a palliative stupor. Useless for a busybody.

Quietly, Inspector Javert rose from the table and stepped outside, his head held low. He who never smoked for leisure lit the newly-rolled cigarette and gave it a few tentative pulls.

The thick smoke had a very sweet, distinctive scent.
