Like all those before him, Light awoke, dazed, in the middle of what appeared to be a calm village. Initially, there was an acceptance, as if he had not one objection to the unfamiliarity of the scenery. It was a dream, after all ... everyone's had them, and there was never any reason to question the wild creativity of one's own mind during sleep before.

With blurred eyes, he looked towards the sky, the image of a fortress, suspended in the air, coming into focus. "What in the world..." he uttered to himself, bringing one hand over his forehead to guard him from the sun. Suddenly, Light knew he was no longer in Kansas anymore.

Of course, the idea of an alternate dream world was not the first possibility to surface in Light's head. The unmistakable reality of it all could just as easily be attributed to lucidity, as he'd studied up the phenomena from time to time, well versed on just how capable the human mind is of creating its own universe, complete with sensory detail and the most authentic atmosphere it could assemble.

"That must be it..." he attempted to convince himself, peering down at his arm as he pulled up his right sleeve to uncover the wrist-watch he so habitually wore. He gave it a tap or two, observing that the seconds hand seemed to be functioning almost too accurately.

Light let out a sigh and closed his eyes. "One plus one equals two, two plus two equals four, four plus four equals eight..." he then began to recite, testing his own awareness with a series of simple math problems. There were a certain number of reality checks one could perform during a state like this, just to evaluate how lucid they truly are. He found no difficulty in solving anything along those lines, becoming almost frustrated with how optimal it all was.

"Alright, there's no way I'm getting worked up over this," he told himself with a light-hearted chuckle. "If anything, I should be pleased with it. It's an opportunity to live out my wildest fantasies, after all." Continuing under the assumption that is truly was a lucid dream, Light smirked, tightening his eyelids to a close as he began to flex his own creativity.

"If I'm doing everything correctly," he contemplated to himself, "I should be able to change the environment to virtually anything I can imagine. So why don't I try a garden, flourishing with apples, as far as the eye can see. And I'll give myself wings, too, so I can fly with Ryuk towards that castle up there." It was nearly becoming a joke to Light, as he attempted to create the most absurd scenario he could think of.

He took a deep breath, before slowly opening his eyes, fully expecting his devised backdrop to come to life before him ... and it didn't.

"...That's... strange," he thought audibly, another hint of frustration surfacing in his tone. "It should have worked." It was at that moment when Light noticed the cell phone-like item peculiarly placed in his pocket. He definitely didn't remember falling asleep with that there.

"What is this?" he promptly questioned, examining it in his hands. "This isn't my cell phone... it's way too high tech. And these aren't even my contacts, who are these people?" Then he noticed the network, vigorously scrolling through lists and lists of posts made available to him as his eyes glued themselves to the device's miniature screen.

Finally, he recalled something Ryuk once told him. A stipulation made known to him regarding usage of the Death Note: "The human who uses this note can neither go to Heaven nor Hell." But he immediately dismissed that. There was just no way he could have spontaneously died in his sleep.

"I don't believe it... " he said, sighing as he pocketed his hands and began to tread. If he couldn't alter the world he was placed in himself, he was about to have a look around.
