Hibari smirks at him, and realizes what a terrible sight he must make- beaten, bloody, slightly burned in places from blasts of energy, or whatever it was. He doesn't even mind too much that Gokudera is seeing him in such a state. Why should he care? Gokudera has seen him weak before, and in any case, he's probably dying. Nothing to worry about, nothing at all, because he won't be alive to see the implications.

Everything has gone so, so far to hell that he can't believe it. The 'dream world' facade has fallen to an eternal nightmare, stretching out as far as he can see- the static and screams the Dreamberry spits are enough to prove that point.

And part of him is glad Gokudera's here, though he doesn't know why- true warriors fight alone, die alone, need no one by their side. (At least Yamamoto isn't here, too. Such an insult may have just killed him.)

Hibari breathes deeply, closing his eyes- the pain isn't anything new, and the wound already hurt a lot, but the sudden burning isn't exactly pleasant. He licks his dry, cracked lips with an equally dry tongue, achieving nothing but the taste of blood in his mouth, coppery and salty, and he'd already had that. When he coughs, when he breathes too sharply, he can taste blood- maybe Minamimoto cracked a rib, or punctured a lung. He doesn't know, and he doesn't care. Either Gokudera will fix him and he'll live, or he'll die in a bloody mess on the school floor, and it won't matter anymore.

He thinks of the last time he was here, at the mercy of someone else, and feels the anger rushing back- but Gokudera isn't Rolo in any way, which makes it bearable. He doesn't mind Gokudera touching him, and it doesn't make him uneasy that he's the one picking up the pieces. Rolo- now, Rolo might have just killed him in his sleep. But Gokudera he trusts, insofar as he trusts anyone; which is to say, not much, but enough.

He barely even feels the needle, really, as it punctures his skin; only just registers that it's there. He can feel it pulling him slowly together, healing him, making him whole. His eyes remain closed, even as he pushes away the pain, because he's trying to not concentrate on anything- and if he looks at Gokudera, his mind will be filled with things he doesn't want to think about ( ... )

He can't help but be satisfied by that- though again, the meaning behind it isn't clear, and it's not even any sort of victory. After all, Gokudera is concentrating hard- it's possible he didn't even hear him. Likely, in fact. But... there was still the thought: who was it that Gokudera had called when the world was ending? Him. He smirks to himself; illusions can be nice, sometimes. There's no harm in letting this one go on a bit longer.

"No," Hibari says, and his voice sounds strange- rough, like a cough without the coughing. His mouth is still dry, too, and that's causing no small amount of discomfort.

Hibari tries to stand up of his own accord (because, honestly, has he become such a herbivore that he even needs help with that?) but his limbs are weak and his head feels like it's stuffed full of fuzz, and his heart is working double-time to pump what little blood he has left, so he grabs Gokudera's hand and hauls himself up that way, hoping he won't pass out. He nods in lieu of speaking, because his jaw goes slack every time he opens his mouth, and stumbles off towards the Disciplinary Committee room. Gokudera wouldn't know the way, of course. The floorplan of New Namimori is a bit different than the original ( ... )

Hibari lets Gokudera lead him on after that, and he thinks about it for a while. He's still thinking about it after they've been in the room a minute, when Gokudera turns to leave. He'll be back, Hibari thinks, and stops- because, really, what proof does he have? Gokudera is done sewing him up, and now, for all he knows, he'll go back to Yamamoto. Of course he will, it makes sense, it's the order of the world. But there's something bothering him that he can't quite put his finger on until he lets go of the words long enough to say it- and he's still surprised when it slips out. "You're not a herbivore ( ... )

Hibari wishes, wishes he could go back to ten seconds ago and keep that thought to himself, because the truth is he doesn't know what it means. Does it just mean he cares about Gokudera, even just a tiny bit? That would be a novel experience. But he knows what prompted him to say it, so he elaborates, barely, "You said it was my job to take advantage of herbivores." That's why he doesn't like leaning on Gokudera; it's one thing to use herbivores for his own purposes, but Gokudera isn't there to be used anymore. He came here to help Hibari because he wanted to, not because he was afraid of him, felt some obligation to do his bidding. That's the difference.

He wonders if Gokudera knows that, hopes he does (doesn't hope? It's not clear to him) because there's no way he's going to say it, and no way he could if he wanted to.

Hibari is halfway through unscrewing the cap on his bottle of water, so very very close to that precious, life-giving liquid, when he feels a rather lot of it being poured onto his head. He splutters, a bit of the water having gone up his nose in unpleasant ways, and glares at Gokudera. There was a time (or perhaps the correct terminology is 'would have been') when he wouldn't have cared, because Gokudera is touching him. But Gokudera isn't his anymore, and so not only does it not make sense, but it's a gigantic breech in protocol.

"What are you doing?" he asks, stalling for time while his brain reboots.
