The pale-haired knight had just rested with his back against a tree and closed his aquamarine eyes, but he hadn't fallen asleep just yet. He was still seething with too many different emotions, the humiliation and hurt from the rejection that had occurred not even a day before still fresh in his mind. He had loved his King more than life itself; he had not necessarily understood all the various workings of the court, but he did know that the King had filled the void that his unknown father had left in his life. The humans around him who had all been born naturally had only served to make that absence an obvious thing.
It would never have occurred to him that his noble devotion to the King was the very thing that had spurred her to deny him the throne. He remained, in both mind and heart, a child. As such, he did not fully understand the thoughts and feelings of others...he only understood one thing. And that was a wish for the pain he now felt to end. The only way he knew how was to lash out at what he identified as the source of his pain. It was the memory of her rejection that was burned into his heart, twisting his love into hatred.
When he opened his eyes, the vision was gone, replaced by a landscape wholly unfamiliar to him. He had taken his rest at the edge of a forest a good distance from Camelot, and the nearest village was still a day's journey by foot. Yet, what he awoke to was a village that he had never before seen in his short life.
The diminutive boy instantly leapt up to his feet in surprise, staring at the unfamiliar landscape in disbelief. Had he somehow become lost, so caught up in his troubles that he had taken the wrong path back to the village he had been born in? If that was indeed the case, then he needed to find out just where he truly was.
Re-fastening his sheathed sword to his belt, Sir Mordred Pendragon made his way into Espoir, keeping an eye out for someone who could direct him to the road he sought.
