Jade had to admit that the mansion Peony found was quite adequate for their needs. He had taken the morning to appraise every room and made a mental inventory of all current furnishings. It would seem that there would be more than enough rooms for all of them, with plenty more should there be any other visitors from Auldrant. Of course during his exploration he managed to select one of the largest bedrooms for himself.
It didn't matter much to Jade where everyone else chose to sleep. Living in the same building was close enough proximity that there was no concern about who chose the rooms near his.
Except for Peony and Dist of course. Jade planned on taking steps to ensure that those two moved into rooms as far from his as possible. He knew it wouldn't stop them from barging in at all hours, but at least his door wouldn't serve as a constant reminder that he was there ready to be pestered.
Unfortunately Jade suspected that within 24 hours he was going to wind up with a pile of junk in his room and wherever he selected his office to be. At least he didn't have to deal with rappigs here.
Needless to say, the abrupt changes in layout did nothing to ease Peony into the idea of completely enjoying this mansion. The Palace back home had the kitchen in the far right, had all the bedrooms on the left, and this one. Oh, this one was a mismatched mess. That didn't mean that Peony disliked it because it wasn't as organized. Of course not, he was the King of Messes, to begin with. He just didn't like having to relearn the layout. A small thing, but what can you do.
And as fate would have it, or really just the chance of wandering around aimlessly... the Emperor himself stumbled upon one of his oh-so devoted subordinates. Or well, Jade.
"Liking it so far, Jade? Or is it not dark enough for you?" A smirk, and a lazy Emperor leaning against the wall.
Ah, speak of the devil, as they say... Jade turned to smile at Peony as one finger pushed the rim of his glasses upward. "Not at all," he said, his tone ever cheerful. "In fact I was just thinking that you should be commended for finding a place suitable to house all of us. Although I suppose it's no wonder that an emperor would inherently know how to find a suitable palace."
"It's in my blood, I guess," Peony agreed, a chuckle following suit as he nonchalantly tipped his head back to enjoy the moment. Once said moment passed, he pushed off the wall and headed over, hands coming to rest in his pockets. His expression, though, clearly held a look of suspicion.
What an interesting question, Jade mused. Valid, perhaps, given his past and personality. And it also reminded him of when he came to Grand Chokmah after abandoning Fomicry. Of course answering it in a straight-forward fashion was simply not his style.
"It would speak badly of me as a soldier of Malkuth if I left His Majesty completely unprotected," Jade said, almost but not quite in a faintly patronizing tone. After all the question had been asked in a serious manner.
A small huff followed that statement. He had opened his mouth to protest, or rather explain that he could do well on his own and didn't need any protecting, but he stopped. This was just another subtle game of 'You annoy me, I'll annoy you'. Therefore, the Emperor huffed, hands on his hips, and gave a shrug.
"Dunno, Jade. It's a pretty big mansion. You probably couldn't even hear an intruder from down the hall."
For a moment there Jade almost wondered if he had offended Peony for ruining the seriousness of the moment. But of course the emperor bounced back rather quickly as expected. It made things so much simpler when Jade wasn't required to remove his mask and speak more frankly.
"I'm sure the sound of him screaming when he trips on your next sword collection will reach me in time."
Peony laughed once more, with a definite twinkle of amusement, and a trace of nostalgia, in his eyes. When the laugh died down, he shrugged once more.
"What makes you think I'm going to start collecting swords again?" He pretended to look thoughtful for a second or two. "I could start collecting something else." And of course, he'd leave it at that, mainly because Jade was right, and he probably would end up collecting swords. Useful and neat.
"Perhaps, but it seems your options might be limited," Jade said before pausing a beat for dramatic effect. "It doesn't seem as though there are any rappigs around after all."
Jade was sure that with no rappigs to mother or empire to run Peony was going to make things entertaining to pass the time. It reminded the Colonel of certain past events and he found himself fighting against a strange sensation that may have been something akin to nostalgia.
"...You don't have to keep pointing that out, Jade," Peony answered, a bit crest-fallen at the fact. Yes, he was quite aware that there wasn't any adorable, cuddly rappigs darting about, but he really didn't need a reminder. Then again.
"There has to be something like them around here, though," Peony began again, trailing off as he scratched his chin thoughtfully.

"I believe that some people have taken cats and dogs as pets," Jade replied as he readjusted his glasses. He wasn't terribly fond of the idea of encouraging Peony to have pets, but he supposed that they might at least distract the emperor from pestering him all the time.
Of course mentioning cats ran Jade the risk of Peony bringing up his dream, but His Majesty hardly needed an excuse to do that.

Luckily for Jade, Peony opted to focus on the suggestion itself instead of the connections it held to previous events. He was quiet for a moment, looking utterly pensive, before a lazy grin stretched across his face.
"Well," he began, still seemingly in thought, "I've never really liked cats that much but ... I guess finding a dog wouldn't be such a bad thing."
A lazy grin. Because Peony completely was not planning on training the new pet to do his own bidding -- when he wasn't smothering it with his endless love for pets, that is.
Oh that grin. Jade knew that can only mean Peony had diabolical plans for whatever pet the emperor came across. "Might I suggest that His Majesty take care when adopting a stray. It would seem that certain people from other worlds have the ability to transform."
Jade had personal experience with one of them after all. It wasn't everyday one met a goddess, let alone in the form of a wolf.

"Transform, huh?"
Peony thought about that for a few, fleeting, brilliant seconds before his hands came to rest on his hips. And he emitted one loud, long laugh before breaking out into a charismatic grin once more.
"You don't think I'd be able to learn how to do that myself, do you? I'd fit right in with my pets back home if I could."
Jade could have told Peony that everyone forgot their time in Somarium when they returned, but why spoil His Majesty's fun? Besides, it might serve as enough of a distraction that Peony won't try to cause mischief to escape boredom. "That sounds like fun. I'm sure the servants would enjoy spending hours trying to tell you and your rappigs apart."
"They'd enjoy it, don't think otherwise," Peony chuckled and then hooked his arms behind his head and grinned. "...So, you like the place, Jade? Or is it not stuffy enough for your tastes, old man?"
