Magnus ended the video feed, turning the phone around and lifting the screen to preview his message. Great. His hair looked just as flat and unappealing in the video as it did in the reflection of the mirror.

But what was the point in styling it in the typical spikes? What reason did he have to bother with product or selecting one of a handful of newly acquired (but nothing to brag about) outfits, when there was no one to see it? No constant flow of people to appreciate, no public to impress. He wasn't going out anywhere special, he wasn't seeing anyone different. He didn't have appointments or special outings planned. It was sunshine and countryside, and idle time to pass, and he hated it.

Gawd, he never thought he'd admit it - that he actually missed his daily life. He missed being overworked and under appreciated - because along with all that, he still had his bed to lounge in, his cat to come home to, and all of his own things to work with. And he didn't have any of that here.

The only saving grace, of course, was Alec. He had seen more of Alec in the last few days than...well, possibly ever. Firstly, because when he stopped to think about it, he hadn't known the shadowhunter terribly long, but mostly, the brief time they had spent together was always interrupted by some crisis or other. Cut short, not to mention refuted in the light of day. Their little secret.

Here, there was no one to keep the secret from. On the other hand, there was no one to show it off to either. What would his shadowhunter friends and family think if they knew he was sharing a house with Magnus? Would they die of mortification? Would they fault him for clinging to the one person he actually knew, in this nightmarish world of strange people (with even stranger looks?)

Magnus couldn't blame him. He just hoped there was more to it than that - that his willingness to be close to him, and keep him around wasn't just a desperate cling to something familiar. Because it definitely didn't stop there for Magnus. Hell, he had other options, even if the place was dull as dirt. He could find his own abandoned real estate. He could latch onto some other pretty-faced boy. Several had seemed to show an interest in him since his arrival. Well, maybe more of a passing curiosity than a love interest, but maybe if he twitched his finger..

No, no. He wasn't interested in starting a fling with underage boys that wanted to pass as girls. He wanted to make the most of his time with Alec; even if nothing that happened here was relevant in the "real world" - even if they returned, somehow, and had no knowledge of the things that transpired here, it was still an opportunity he couldn't pass up. A rare gift he was grateful to have been given. It's not like he had done anything recently to deserve it. Well, the sacrifice of his power and all that, but it was a last-ditch effort, a pathetic offering. He thought maybe Alec would finally get the picture. Clearly, he hadn't, even if he had felt pity for the warlock.

Well, whatever the reason, this opportunity was golden, and he hadn't hesitated in taking it. As long as Alec was willing, as long as the shadowhunter seemed to want him around, he would be there. And he would keep his grumbling and his lamentations about how much he hated the place as a whole to a minimum (because how was that constructive?)

Setting the cellphone on the counter, Magnus stepped up to the window, looking outside. Alec's dark hair moved with the breeze, obscuring his face from view. Well, that was fine. Maybe he could get away with watching him for a while, undetected. It's not like he had anything else to do, having given up on his hair.
