It was late. Midnight. The moon and the stars were hidden by the dark clouds that covered the small, populated world; clouds that had slowly gathered within just the past hour.
A strange noise, like a low radio frequency broadcast through sirens could be heard before it suddenly cut out just as it started.
Then the image of her appeared. Everywhere. Every glass and reflective surface including water. The Overlord was there, staring out at seemingly nothing. Her face was pale and her eyes dull.
But the image wasn't static. It glitched, like a broken TV set. Then lips parted for a brief second before they moved in such a rapid pace that not even the most experienced lip reader could know what she was saying. Nor would anyone be able to hear her words. For though her lips moved, it was all silent.
Until the image audibly cracked like crunched glass.
Even if the surface wasn't glass, a web of lines could be seen, along with the Overlord's horrified face. She turned toward the outside of the city, in the direction of the fast moving storm that had been approaching Somarium. A wall of sand was speeding toward the city, the dull roar growing as it came closer.
The barrier shone brilliantly, flashing an array of colors before it flickered.
Then shattered.
The barrier had failed and was now completely gone.
"No," she breathed, her voice barely audible but still everyone could hear it, even in their sleep. All remaining color drained from her face and her eyes fluttered before she seemed to faint just as the image cut off.
A few silent minutes passed before the sandstorm hit everything in full force, the waves of sand pelting anything in its way. But along with the roaring winds of the sandstorm, faintly and just barely discernible were the wails of the monsters that had long lurked outside. They were slowly making their way toward the now unprotected city, the fallen barrier replaced only by a wall of sand.
