She really wasn't going to get used to this place anytime soon. The entire premise was beyond illogical, and barring that, there were too many unknown variables that she simply did not have the means to derive. And as confident as she was in her abilities to adapt, even she had to admit that she wasn't comfortable in a situation which she had no control over. Being in the know had always been a certain privileged of hers, one that she had long since taken for granted it seems, if what's happened in the past little while had any say in the matter at all ( ... )

Eliot hadn't even noticed Rita as she approached him. His anger level was slowly building up, as he finally arrived at the scene where that damn Edgar finally made his first of many infuriating appearances. The second Rita spoke, his shoulders jerked up as he suddenly tensed.... Oh no, he did NOT just hear what he thought he heard.

He was now looking over the top of his book at her, a dangerous look in his eyes. "...What did you just call it?"

She totally didn't get the cue. Then again, she really wasn't paying much attention to the person. The disappointment from earlier was still palpable, and, well, she wasn't known for being amazingly tactless for nothing. Crossing her arms in typical annoying Rita fashion, she raised an eyebrow.

"Reading all that junk must have rotted your brain, or something." She sniffed with derision. "You know. Fiction. Novella. Yarn. Non-educational drivel. Things that little kids and people who don't know any better kill time with. A children's book."

"What the hell is your problem?!" God! It was obvious he liked the book if he was reading it, and this girl just waltzes right on up to him and essentially calls him an idiot for it?! How rude could you get?

... Yeah, Eliot really has no right to talk, but at least he always waited until he had at least talked to someone before he started spouting off his opinions on them.

"Just because it's fictional doesn't mean it's for children!" Seriously... This series had over ten books, and they were all pretty substantial in size. It also dealt with a whole lot of serious issues, and encouraged the readers to become involved in analyzing the plot to try to find out for themselves who the murderers were before they could reach the end of the book.

It may be because of Rita's solo upbringing in the Scholarly City of Aspio, otherwise known as The City of Shade, The City Were the Sun Don't Shine, or even, The City of Those Weirdos Who Are Married to Their Research - but Rita never really had a problem with doling out her opinion to others, whether they asked for it or not. Usually the latter, actually, since no one in their right of mind would ask Rita for her opinion, but that's never stopped her and it probably wouldn't stop her now ( ... )

"I'M the one who decides what a good use of MY time is, got it?" Eliot snapped. So that's why she was why she was so stuck up about this. She thought that scientific texts were the only thing worth reading? "So, what? You're saying that I should have my nose in a textbook every second of my life? Sure, it's good to study, but I actually want to have a life BEYOND just robotically learning useless facts. You wanna become a textbook yourself, where every fact is absolute, that's fine by me. I would prefer actually pay attention to living, and facing the world, that constantly changes, instead of hiding behind a wall of scientific 'facts'.

Woah, he's sure worked up about this. Though Rita had half a mind that 90% of the people in the surrounding area consisted of nothing but absolute idiots, you had to hand it to the guy for standing up for his opinion like that. People like that were worth having around. Not that you would ever heard that from Rita's mouth, though.

He didn't seem too much of a researcher, though, so she couldn't tackle this from that angle. Though him getting worked up over it also made her get worked up over it. The feeling was contagious, and before you know it, she was getting all defensive.

"I'm just saying that if you want to be facing the world like that, you've gotta know your stuff." She returned. "You'll never know when something you've learned in a book will be useful for understanding the world better, but if you don't learn anything, big chance you'll be able to use that knowledge later. Stuff in fiction's all theoretical value. If you really want to face this world, you have to make an effort to learn about it, instead of hiding away ( ... )

"I already live at school most of the year! As if I would just let my brain rot! There's a difference between using brain cells, and overusing brain cells to the point where nothing else matters!"

Wow... She was actually sticking to her guns?! He had rarely ever actually met with anyone who kept on preaching their own opinions back at him when he had gotten like this before.

"Besides, sometimes, it takes learning theoretical concepts for you to be able to understand the truth of the whole concept."

"You live at a school? And they let you read stuff like that? What are they teaching you in there?" Huh, surprises never cease, do they. He must be some kind of rich kid, then. Maybe a noble's kid - apparently, sending their kids for a term at Aspio was all the rage in the noble class now-a-days. Impossible that he came from her world, of course, but she wouldn't be surprised if it was commonplace in other worlds as well. Arrogant idiots thought alike no matter where they were from; would a couple of dimensional gaps really change that?

"I doubt learning a couple of new facts is 'overusing' brain cells, really." She narrowed her eyes. "But really, how are you supposed to arrive at the truth if all you do is base your thoughts off of someone else's theories? You should gather info for yourself and make an educated decision, instead of relying on speculation."
