Itoshiki Nozomu wandered through the city, still pondering what happened. He headed towards it hoping to get a clearer understanding of where he was. Though used to strange things happening, this was the first time he woke up in a field with no recollection of going there. He tried to get a hold of his situation by taking note of his surroundings, but gave up after spotting the floating castle. He still glances at it from time to time, not giving up on the hunch that it would fall on him when he lets his guard down. The worst has the tendency to happen when one comes to the conclusion that it won't happen this time, like when -

No, he'll get back to that train of thought later. He's supposed to be figuring out how he ended up like this now!

Maybe he'll get a better idea if he recalled what happened to him last.

"Ahh, the bills!"

The tax collectors came over after Nozomu refused to pay them, saying that everyone should stop relying on money to solve problems. They must have evicted him and sent him here while he was sleeping!

"No, that's not it..." It couldn't be. That was last week and Komori-san stopped them before they got to it.

The last thing that happened... the last thing he could recall was... the curry!

That college student from next door cooked Nozomu and Majiru another batch of curry for dinner tonight. Both of them collapsed almost immediately after finishing it! That sure happens to them a lot. Maybe it has something to do with the curry? ...No, that kind lady wouldn't...

"So this is a dream after that time, is it...? No, it can't be." There was something else. That's not what happened last. There was another day after that. Besides, he remembered the dream he had then and it was a lot weirder.

Ah, yes. He was telling the class about technology getting more fragile in these days when Maria suddenly drop kicked him. He couldn't recall waking up, no matter how hard he tried.

"Ahh, I died." Nozomu pounded his palm in realization. He finally died... or so he thinks.

He didn't see the Sanzu River he saw last time he went to the afterlife, but it would explain the floating castle and the people he's been seeing around. Only the afterlife would have such diverse people from different eras such as a tribal native, warring medieval warriors, and a futuristic looking samurai. There's even a random normal looking schoolgirl mixed in. It's even stranger than what he was used to seeing.

It's a bit disappointing that it didn't turn out to be the peaceful Nirvana he expected. Even in what he thinks is death, false promises still plague him.

Nozomu silently despairs.
