[To say that James had been quite confused as of late would be a gross understatement. After having run into his fair share of strange folk (talking plants, French amnesiacs, and vampires, oh my), talking to Treize had been a welcome event. For all he knew, joining Khushrenada’s motley crew could turn out to be a grave mistake. For the time being, however, having a sense of purpose would help Doakes keep his wits about him. The worst thing that could happen to the former military man would be having an abundance of free time on his hands and nowhere to direct his energy. The promise of a firearm wasn’t too shabby an idea, either.

Upon arriving at his destination, James delivered three solid knocks to the door before him and waited for a response.]

*It isn't very long before steps are audible from the other side of the door - and Treize pulls it open.*

Sgt. Doakes. It's a pleasure to meet you in person.

[Doakes takes a quick glance at his surroundings, then extends a hand towards Treize.]

Same here. Not like I had anything to do with my free time. So, what is it that I can help you with?

*Treize grips Doakes' hand firmly in a shake* Sergeant, I believe your skills as a detective may well prove very useful in this place. Though in a perfect world, one would never have to use them... this is not a perfect world, as I'm sure you know, and it is filled with imperfect people.

*He turns, gesturing for the man to follow him* Please, this way - you asked for a sidearm, correct? For the moment, it should be sufficient to keep yourself armed in the event that fighting breaks out.

[James smirks briefly to himself. ‘Perfect’ wasn’t exactly something he thought could ever be achieved, so long as humans were involved. He doesn’t believe it’s a bad thing, as he still believes people are inherently good... for the most part.

He feels relieved to know he’ll soon be receiving a firearm. There wasn’t exactly any particular reason to feel threatened, but at least he would have a means to defend himself other than his bare fists. Whenever anything went awry, his hand would automatically drift to where his belt holster used to be. Being stuck in Somarium without it had almost felt like coming to work without pants on, it was that unsettling.

The Sergeant raised an eyebrow at Treize’s words, recalling a certain individual he’d spoken with via Dreamberry.]

This wouldn’t have anything to do with a loud weirdo in sunglasses, would it?

*Treize looks back over his shoulder, the hints of a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth* I'm familiar with the man you're speaking of, but I assure you, Sergeant - should something go wrong, a young hoodlum may well be the least of our concerns.

Sounded like he was going to start some kind of riot with his friends, I thought maybe you wanted me to put a stop to that. But if you have more interesting things for me to do than crowd control bullshit, then I ain’t gonna complain.

So, elaborate.

If he does start a riot, then we would intervene, though I doubt he will prove to be anything more than a boisterous nuisance.

There are others in this world, however, who may well become genuine dangers. A short while ago, there was quite the uproar when a man was attacked, killed, and eaten by a group of cannibals. Before that, it was a man who severely injured another through public torture in retribution for some perceived injury. Before that incident - when I first arrived, it was in the midst of a natural disaster, and the world was beset by shadow creatures that were attacking the populace here.

I realize that to a man such as yourself, these may seem like fairy tales or legends. Nevertheless, I assure you that they are all very real. This world is considerably different from the ones you and I come from.

You'd be surprised by how many destructive riots began just because one moronic asshole had a decent pair of lungs on him...

[Doakes continued to follow the brunette, listening in silence. He knew of vampires and other strange, potentially deadly residents, but this was the first he'd heard of cannibals. Hell, the torture and shadow creatures sounded like a walk in the fucking park.]

I gathered that much when I started talking to a blue koala-dog thing on my 'magical' camera phone. The shadow creatures, can they be killed by conventional means?

As far as I know, they couldn't be killed at all. Harmed, yes - we were able to drive them away - but it seems that whatever we threw at them, they would eventually recover. Nevertheless, they were beasts... frighten them enough, and they kept their distance.

*He turns the corner into the armory, throwing a nod at the blond man waiting inside* Feel free to check the weapon lockers along the wall, Sergeant - I can't promise that you'll find a weapon you're familiar with, but perhaps there will be something close.

*Treize looks back at Doakes, gesturing to the blond pilot* I would like to introduce you to another new arrival to the world. Sergeant Doakes, Captain Graham Aker. Captain Aker, Sergeant James Doakes.

[Doakes poked through a vast assortment of weapons, some of which he didn't even feel comfortable with touching. One of the handguns he picked up began emitting a soft humming sound once his fingers brushed against some sensor doodad, so he quickly set it back down. Luckily, he found a more than decent Sig Sauer P226, complete with shoulder holster.

Once he was introduced to Graham Aker, Doakes extended his hand in greeting. Aker looked pretty young to be a Captain, but he wasn't going to complain.]

Getting back to the shadows creatures, did they seem attracted to something when they appeared at all? I haven't run into any at random while searching the surrounding areas.

[Returning both Treize's nod and Doake's handshake, Graham sized up the new arrival. Definitely not a man he'd want to have opposite him in a fight, and he seemed quite familiar with the weapon he'd chosen. Not bad at all. Turning his attention to the conversation, he listened with interest.]

They seemed to be attracted to us, Sergeant. Whether they were hunters seeking to kill us for prey, or whether they were drawn to us for other reasons remains to be seen. *A small smile* I'm not surprised you haven't encountered any. Thankfully, they vanished as the weather cleared up, leading me to believe there's a connection with the beasts and exceptionally foul weather. Either they caused the storm, or they appeared because of it.
