There are more people in this area than the other ones Itachi has surveyed so far--he can sense them closer to the center of the village--but it's a quiet area and not many people are out. It may have something to do with the strange transmission that Kakashi had sent out over the Dreamberry.

It makes it harder to get a better grasp of his surroundings, when he could not observe the inhabitants of the village as well, but it makes it easier for him to stay out of the public eye as well.

It seems that many of the people are at or near the church--there are bursts of chakra from that direction--and for a brief moment, Itachi is tempted to head in that direction, if only for the purpose of observing these people in action. But considering the fact that Kakashi is there and quite a few others as well, it would be hard for him to remain unseen.

No, it is best for him to remain unobtrusive and out of the open for now.

It's a rush of colors, of greens and blues and browns, all melding together in this distorted world he's cutting through, wind slicing sharply along skin and splitting apart strands of hair.

Espoir is mapped in Sasuke's mind, constructed imagery trapped by memory powerful enough that he can visualize each path he takes without active use of his eyes. He doesn't bother. He knows where the church is, has scouted the area thoroughly despite Kakashi's given map. He doesn't need to visualize the steps he takes.

He instead focuses the surroundings that phase by, grasping onto every little thing that touches the edge of his awareness. Sounds whisper by his ears, dancing upon waves of each gusty breeze he flies against; the fall of leaves, the snap of twigs, fluttering chimes, rustling straw.

Wind chime.

Sasuke abruptly spins around, one foot planting heavily in the dirt as the mometum cut short drags him backwards several paces. Red bleeds into black and he can see so clearly that colored glow of chakra, of--

"Itachi."

Itachi had felt the flaring of the familiar chakra--eyes widened slightly, wondering why he had not felt it sooner--but did not attempt to further hide himself as it appeared that his brother would continue past him without much incident.

Then the wind had blown, tousling his hair and the strings of bells on his wide-brimmed hat.

And he had stopped. Now Itachi finds himself faced with the familiar, carefully blank features of his younger brother, mirror-like eyes locked but reflecting distorted messages. This is something that he has wanted to avoid, carefully set up so that they would not meet. How could he have not been more observant, knowing that Sasuke's residence was so near? Had the distaction of Kakashi's message been enough to throw him off of his game to the point that he was not as alert as he should be? Or was it the silence and emptiness of the area that left him feeling overly at ease ( ... )

Sasuke keeps his face impassive, tries to, but his brows are furrowing down. He breaks from the slight crouch, back straightening as he surveys the man standing before him. His side's protesting; a reminder. He doesn't let that show on his face

His lips part to form words he doesn't currently have. He's silent, they're both silent.

The hand at his side trembles between relaxing and tightening. Every instinct screams at him to unsheath his Kusanagi, wield it, run Itachi through with it. He's an avenger; eight years of his life he'd spent hunting down this man. For it to have been a lie, a waste of time, a joke; for the dream to be-- it couldn't be--

Sasuke doesn't want to say anything to him, doesn't want to have to ask.

It's the only thing he can do, right now.

Sasuke presses his hand to his thigh -- it's not going to curl into a fist; he's better at controlling himself than this.

"Is it true," he asks, voice soft and quiet, barely loud enough for anyone to catch.
