It was dawn only in name, as the first shy rays of the sun had yet to stain the sky with their light hues. The air was pregnant with moisture, noticeable to the young lieutenant only when she had stopped for breath well into the village.
It was the first time she had made to stop since leaving the city running.
Soma bent forward as her hands rested on her knees, shoulders heaving as she took as much needed air in. She had barely had the time to change, let alone process this bewildering surprise she had seen with her very eyes. The jacket hanging on her thin frame was too large, but it warded the cool air of the early morning all too well.
"Colonel," she whispered to the dissipating darkness, as she looked hopefully ahead.
