She must've fallen asleep.

Sitting by Sorata's bedside, waiting for him to regain consciousness... it was the most painful thing she'd ever had to do. She looked like a mess; her eyes were red from crying so much -- she hadn't known just how many tears she had -- and she looked as ( Read more... )

He stops short.

Maybe he's a little slow sometimes. He hadn't expected Karen-san. He hadn't even thought to think about anyone-

Arashi.

It had to be her. He knew what she looked like. He knew her even at a distance. He'd know her if he was blind. He'd spent every spare second of months looking at her, sneaking glances when she didn't notice or when she did, if he could get away with it, memorizing every expression and feature, the color of her eyes in different lights, the way her hair fell, the way her hair fell when she first woke up, when she'd been running, when she was doing her homework, when she was walking, or sitting, or frowning, or- or crying, and she's standing right over there. She's here. Here. Right here.

Found her.

There's a trick to not being upset, and that trick is ignore it. Hide it. Forget it. Tell yourself it's okay and think of something else, anything else, hum a song, try to move your fingers, stare at the new scars, learn to write your name left-handed, do anything except think about it, about her, about her being gone, thinking she'd gone to grab a snack, maybe, except she didn't come back, and the dawning feeling-the thing he had known in the back of his mind all along, the hidden maiden and oh, it was his fault. What if he never saw her again?

What if he only saw her again when he died?

That was supposed to be his purpose, but it wasn't enough anymore. He couldn't. He couldn't die without seeing her again, without telling her-a lot of things, but mostly that he'd take the blame for her powers, yes, and more, and maybe they could go on one date, that wouldn't be too much to ask for, right? And what if she was hurt? What if she was sad? What if he was? He could spin it as selflessly as he wanted but- but without her, even without her just being near, without her presence carefully marked by his spells, without her stomping away in anger, even!-

And now, like a prayer answered, she was standing not twenty feet away.
