"Sephiroth! Hey, Seph! Wanna go outside for a while!"
At the first call of his name, the eight year old cadet had immediately scrambled from his now-customary place in the living room, taking care not to fling aside the book he'd been devouring and thudded down the hallway, skidding to a halt near the door where Zack Fair was affixing a leash to the big puppy they called Soldier. The dog barked as he approached, making the boy reflexively flinch a bit, but he nevertheless snapped to quasi-attention; ingrained habits were hard to break, after all.
"Yes, I'd like to go outside, sir, if I may."
Although everyone living here had been encouraging him to speak more and dispense with the formal answers, they still tripped from the boy's tongue out of pure reflex. But gradually, he was slowly overcoming his instinctive trepidation about this place, slowly but surely putting memories of that sterile Tower to the back of his young mind.
Besides, he was starting to like this Zack Fair. Who grinned down at him and nodded.
"Of course you may! You may go outside whenever you like, Seph; the yard's all yours." Then Zack winked. "As long as you take Soldier with you, ya should be fine."
The canine in question "ruffed" once at hearing his name, pulling against the leash to try and lick the boy's hand with a soft whine. Sephiroth pulled his hand back, but couldn't resist the pup's plaintive look, and finally reached out and gently ruffled the soft ears.
"...o-okay." Although not entirely sure how to go about this - as he'd never had a pet before in his life - he was nevertheless determined to perform this assignment to the best of his ability and firmly took the leash from Zack, the former opening the door and chuckling as boy and dog tumbled out into the backyard, Sephiroth not really expecting Soldier's exuberance.
