Aya wasn't generally one to fidget. She had enough self-awareness to know she felt nervous, but why was beyond her. Perhaps she was just on edge from lack of company. It was a nice suite she stayed in-- easily larger than the apartment she'd shared with Ran last time-- and at the time, she'd loved the spaciousness. She'd imagined the get-togethers she could host there. Imagined the place filled with friends.
The only problem was that it seldom was, and without the group of people there to fill the rooms and add noise to the air, it was too much space, serving only to draw more attention to her prolonged solitude.
She'd straightened the entire apartment in case Hatori saw inside. Or came inside, as was entirely possible after dinner, wasn't it? She'd dressed up, wiped down the kitchen counters, swept the floors, tried to settle into reading one of her magazines on the coffee table, then decided she needed to change her earrings for a different pair.
He'd given her a nice smile just before hanging up the night before. Maybe she could get him to do it again. A girl could hope.
