Ah, but it'd been too long since he indulged. Sephiroth swam hard for the lake's center, feeling his muscles burn under his skin at the hard workout. But it was long overdue, and necessary if he was to keep himself in more-than-perfect shape. And Sephiroth did nothing by halves.
Nessie was apparently happy to see the tall SOLDIER; she chirped and flipped and splashed with child-like glee at Sephiroth's call. Of course, the tidbits he'd purchased on the way to to the lake might have had a bit to do with her exuberance, too. But just for the General's own ego, he'd take her delight personally. The large beast swam rings around him as he knifed through the water but he resolutely ignored her invitations to play; he had to finish his work first.
Back and forth, back and forth, diving down as deep as he could before the need for air and water pressure became too much, surfacing again only to repeat the same. Nessie's interventions finally became distracting enough that he inhaled a great lungful of water while submerged and shot for the surface, spluttering and choking. Her serpentine head broke water not far away and before he thought about it, Sephiroth smacked her on the nose with two fingers, much like scolding a certain puppy when he chanced to steal a shoe or two.
"No!" he admonished the creature in a stern tone, to which she jerked back and blinked at him, then vanished beneath the wavelets, disappearing into the gloom. Trying to regain his breath and stay afloat at the same time, Sephiroth rolled his eyes and sighed. He'd probably offended her, and the very thought that it bothered him that he'd hurt the feelings of a sea beast was just short of ludicrous. By all the gods, this place was getting to him.
Lungs still burning, ShinRa's General headed for the shore, swimming atop the water's surface slowly, letting his aching body recuperate as he headed for shallower water. He'd almost reached the dark drop-off when he felt a tentative brush against his leg and a questioning chirp just behind him. He swiveled around, seeing just the top of Nessie's slick head peeking up from the surface and he had to stave off a chuckle.
"I apologize, little one," he called to her softly, gently patting the water with one hand. The waves surged a bit as she swam closer, finally bumping her nose against his hand; truly, a child-like soul. Sephiroth had to grin as he rubbed her head, scratching along the ridge of her topfin and he couldn't help chuckling as she shuddered happily. "Let me catch my breath a bit, and I'll come and play, mm?"
The creature trilled happily and nosed at his torso, gently helping push him further to shore. Sephiroth wound one arm around her long sinuous neck and swam with her to the bank, kicking away as she veered off to keep from becoming stuck in the shallower water. He hauled himself out on the bank, collapsing on his back in the soft warm grass.
Really, only half an hour and he was this winded? Shiva, he was getting soft.
