It was bright... When had it gotten so light? When his vision had finally gone black, Elliot was sure that he had reached the point where he couldn't hold on any longer. He wanted to, desperately, but he knew in his heart that there was no fighting the inevitable. Vincent would take care of the rest. There was nothing more he could do... The words he told Vincent was something he would never get to tell Leo for himself.
So how, after all of that, could he suddenly see light? It wasn't the flickering dull light of the candles in the chamber. It was as brilliant as sunlight. He wondered, was this what people always meant when they talked about the light one sees when the end finally came?
Any thoughts he might have had about passing on to the afterlife disappeared instantly when a chilling sensation rushed back to his body. His mind finally stopped suppressing what he should have been feeling all along.
If Elliot had the strength to sharply gasp at the rush of feeling returning to his body, he would have, but he could barely breathe at all. He was in pain. It was throbbing out, reminding him harshly of every one of the countless wounds that tore into his body, but even worse was the pain that wasn't physical. Something that had been a part of him for years had been ripped away by Elliot's own hands, and it did not want to go easily.
Pain overwhelmed everything else. He would forever have no idea how he did it, but even through the pain, Elliot somehow managed to open his eyes. His vision was completely unfocused, but he could barely make out that he's still lying on his side, but... He could see the blue sky. The light really was sunlight. He was lying on grass, or at least, he thought it was grass, but it was very hard to tell, because almost all of it around him was stained red. That was all he could see before his eyes closing again at a fresh wave of agony. He had no idea where he was, nor how he had gotten there, but somehow, the pain showed him that he had to be alive.
... But not for much longer. He could feel himself fading again rapidly. He had already faced dying moments before--
--So, why was it more terrifying to face now?
