Fay was still concerned for his companions, so he had Mokona give him Kurogane’s sword. He enchanted the weapon to be stored in Kurogane’s arm and summoned from his hand. That way, it was always be within reach. With these preparations in place, the party left for Fay’s country.
Once they arrived, Fay led them to Ruval Castle, his former home, which was still littered with the bodies of the people killed by Lord Ashura. Within the castle, Lord Ashura was already expecting them, and immediately began to weave a confusing web of illusion that Fay was completely sucked into. As his past swirled around them for the whole group to see, he was reminded of his dead brother and his promises to Fei Wang. Lord Ashura was determined to have Fay kill him, so he severely warped his sanity to get his wish at any cost.
In his confusion, Fay panicked when Kurogane drew his sword and advanced. He believed Kurogane would kill him due to learning that he was a traitor. He attacked Kurogane with his magic and Kurogane began to fight his way through the illusion and even to attempt to attack Lord Ashura directly. Finally, he managed to get his hands on Fay and pinned him roughly to the ground, pointing out the holes in Lord Ashura’s story (most especially the part about the magical marking suppressing his magic). Fay’s lucidity began to return, but he still could not bring himself to kill Lord Ashura, not when the man had been so kind to him before. Knowing this, Lord Ashura moved on to threatening Sakura’s body instead. This finally prompted Fay to attack his former king, but he was still holding back, so then Lord Ashura took it one step further: he gravely wounded Kurogane. Fay lashed back at Lord Ashura and he managed to rescue Sakura from his grip. After doing this, he attacked him again, this time with a spell that was meant to take out both himself and Lord Ashura. The king stopped him, catching him by the throat and strangling him. As Lord Ashura continued to threaten Fay’s companions, Kurogane regained his footing and in one swift move, he stabbed Lord Ashura with his sword.
Fay wept for the man who removed him from his prison, which touched Lord Ashura as he died. He explained that he wanted to free Fay from his curse and to put an end to his own miserable existence, but with his companions, he would surely be all right. Fay closed Lord Ashura’s eyes with a gentle hand.
Fay’s brother’s corpse was suddenly raised from the depths of the pool by one of Sakura’s memory feathers, hidden in the stone he was buried with. As the feather returned to Sakura’s body, Fay’s memory was cleared up and he realized that he wasn’t responsible for his brother’s death after all. His brother’s body was finally able to decay and disappear and Kurogane told Fay to let him rest. Fay was finally at peace.
Then, because Fay failed to kill Lord Ashura himself, the second curse activated. Using Fay’s magic as its source, the curse began to close the world, and would have made it impossible for the group to leave. Fay tried to use his magic to have them escape, but he didn’t have enough left due to how much he had used in the fight. Fortunately, an earring that Mokona had generated enough power to make a hole for them to escape, but when Kurogane tried to take Fay with him, the curse wouldn’t allow Fay to leave because he was the spell’s core. Fay told him to go, and when Kurogane let go of him, Fay was resigned, but glad that at least they would live.
Suddenly, blood was flying. Kurogane had cut of the arm with Fay’s magic in it and used it to replace Fay as the core. As Fay watched, disbelieving, he was dragged out of Seres and into Mokona’s doorway, spirited away to safety. Because of Kurogane’s sacrifice, they all had survived.
